Dear Sir

The office of attorney General for this Sol. District, having become vacant, by the resignation of H W Dunlap Esqr I have taken the liberty to recommend to your consideration, for that appointment George W Terrill Esqr.

It is perhaps unnesessary for me to inform you of my solicitude on the subject, as I do not presume it would effect your duty. You are, already well acquainted with the character of Major Terrill, as well as with his talents & integrity. But I presume you are not so well acquainted with his situation in life as myself.

It is true Major Terrill marrid the daughter of a prosperous merchant in this place, and from this circumstance it might be presumed, that he needs no helping hand from those who have the power to extend: But it is equally true, sir, that he need not look to that source for any assistance

Should you see proper to confer the appointment upon Major Terrill, I am satis =fied you could not have bestowed it on a more worth & deserving object, or one who would ^feel under deeper obligations, or entertain a greater sense of gratitude; he is now poor, and from the purchase of his print =ing establishment, is some what [imbarrised?] in his primary affairs, and I believe, with the [?] of the appointment, he will be enabled to support his family, and retain his printing office, which other =wise I fear will have to pass into other hands, for I know there is a strong disposit =ion to obtain his office for the purpose of supporting different principles [& men?] from those now supported by its propriators and you know, that this part of the district ^is composed in a great degree of Ky & [?] folks &c &c -

I am well satisfied, that the appointment of Major Terrill, would prove as satisfactory to the people of

My friend Major G. W. Terrel will be an applicant for the pro tem appointment of atto - General for this District. he is a high minded and an honorable man and in -ferior in talents to none of his age in Tennessee, that he will in euery respect be competent to the discharges of the duties of the office. no one who knows him can for a moment scrutinise - if in your discretion you should ^think proper to confer on him the appointment, the selection will so far as my knowledge extends, be acceptable to the people of this District. - confer the app -ointment on whome you may, I will say that you could not giue it to a more ^worthy or deseruing man, nor one that would fearless of consequences discharge the duties of the office with more fidel -ity
