I do hereby certify that Alex Nelson hath performed the duties which the Law requires of him as Sheriff of Hawkins County in making a return of the Votes given in Hawkins County for Electors to Elect a Prest and Vice President of the United States, and that he is intitled [sic] ^to the sum ten Dolls Eighty five cents for traveling 60 miles and three days attenden [sic] two days in taking the Votes in his own County, and one day in Comparing the Votes in the place where the Laws derect Given Under hand this fifth day of Novr 1804

Nashville June 5. 1825.

Dear sir,

I have concluded to give the pro tem appoint -ment of suveyor of Hawkins county to Gabrial McCraw to whom be pleased to forward a commission.

Numerous applications have been made to me for the pardon of Burrill Tanner who was convicted of horse stealing at the March term of the circuit court of Roane county. The court ordered the execution of the sentence on the third Wednesday in June, with the express view as I am informed, of giving time to apply for a pardon. This circumstance with the unanimous appli -cation ^in his behalf of the Jurors who tried him, has determined me to remit the branding and whipping, and I have directed General Brown to forward to you the clerks certificate of the sentence of the court, upon the receipt of which I wish you to forward a remission of the sentence so far as relates to the whipping and branding. I have directed a suspension of the execution of the sentence untill the first of July, to afford time for a pardon in due form to go on.

The brethern have employed two nights in indiavouring [sic] to settle the dispute between the two Generals- and rumour says without effect, though it is also said ^that they will persevere until something is done.
