if you know better. I only wanted to be sure that you did [underlined] know. Sometimes we get ideas about words when children that are mistakes & we never find out about them – for instance I "always want" [underlined] to say Ludricious ["ri" double underlined] when I mean ludicrous ["ludi" underlined]. There is no such word as the first one I spellt [spelt] but when a child I read it that way & never quite [underlined] got it fixed in my head although I know [underlined] about it perfectly – but always must stop to think.

"Bull Lion" looks fine & got some carved ebony elephants & some interesting Kodac [Kodak] views of India. He did not see Norman Bates – but talked over the phone with him. – Waltman & Hall

send you the "Cal" concerning it. Also others.

Bull has gone to India again.

Elanor Lion is going to have a son or daughter?

I am feeling rotten. My body aches at all times & I am always in an unhappy mood. These darn neck makes me sick.

Saturday night we spent the evening at the Sargents where we had a fine dinner. It was very

nice and I was glad we went.

Sunday I went riding in father-in-law's machine to Byron Hot Springs, California and the surrounding country. Just Mr. & Mrs. & Martha Elizabeth Linderman Bates & myself. Gee it was certainly great but I was terribly tired when I arrived home.

I am afraid that I'll have to do as Dr. Eaves said & take out a leave of absence for when in class I get exhausted, etc. & at present I'm way behind weight. The trouble with taking out a leave is I can't get these same prerequisite courses for a year & by that time I won't feel like going back.

Will write very soon

With love

Jocelyn Bates.

will see him – this next trip. They have transfered [transferred] Bull and Albion to the Naval Auxiliary – and they are to make two more trips to India – and then take their examinations for third mate – then for the Atlantic.

Leslie came to tell us good-bye – and of course was as funny as ever. It was the first time that we had seen him – since he entered the Aviation School. I don't think much of the way they have been treated – do you?

Monties ship went off and left him the other day in N.Y.C. He had been given liberty for two days and when he and some fellow officers appeared – to take the last launch – there was no launch. The ship

My dear Edward:

In one of your letters recently you said you had only $1.75, that you had not been paid for last month, and that you had borrowed $10.00 from Lesley. I am not sending you any money, as I have told you to ask me when you needed it, and you have not done so. You may not have intended it as a hint, I don't think you did, but I feel that you ought to write to me openly for either a gift or a loan. I dont think that I have yet received any thanks for paying for your uniform at Adams & West.

I am not complaining, as I am used in my family to not receiving thanks, but all of you, for your own sakes, should show appreciation of things done for you. Lesley says his watch is on the bum. I have sent him a box today to ship it back to me in, and I have seen Shreve who will overhaul it. How is yours now?

Last Sunday was opening "to"[crossed out] day at the boat house. It was miserably cold and windy, and I dont like to see the crowds of young fellows who ought not to be in civilian clothes. Tommy Allen was there in his Flying Cadet Uniform and looked well in it. Howard Deas telephoned in last night to get the latest dope about you. Bull Lion goes again on the Colusa to India. He brought us a
