Have you seen Dick since you went down to Camp Kearney?

I know what a treat it would be to you to see him and to see your father & mother who your Aunt Eleanor tells me are going soon to see you. I am very glad of that. It will do them good too for they miss you[inserted] at home very very much.

Eleanor and little John have left us to go to California

[right page:] and it has left a great blank in our house I assure you.

Do they treat you well in Camp Edward? I hope they are giving you good bountiful meals. When your work is so arduous you should have a good appetite –

The Henry Cullodens are hoping for a visit from you[inserted] about this time and all looking forward to it with great pleasure for they are very proud of you and I think everyone is who knows you – This is not to make you vain my dear but just

My dear old Sned:

We received your letter of Nov. 12th yesterday, so you see what a long time elapsed, and what a Godsend to us your cable was telling us you were well. I think Mother and I would have been in the lunatic asylum had we not received your cable, and had had to wait until now to know that you had passed Nov 11th unhurt.

Dec 20th. Lesley has been discharged and arrived home last Monday. He went to Auburn last night to get a certificate from the School Board and expects to be back tonight. He does not know yet what he will do, but we have understood that male teachers are in demand. While we were at dinner last night, Jos came in unexpectedly. He is through at Nelson, but may go back to the Willows Ranch to go into the hog end of the game. He was tremendously interested as we all were in your letter, which I have had copied and have sent to Nor, Dick, Grandmother Rixon and Henry Culloden, all of whom will be anxious to see it. You certainly have been having your share of fighting and hardships and it was [word crossed out] Divine Providence that stopped the fight before you had to go through the wire. Mother says "the poor dear boy, not having a bath for over two months, and not having taken off his clothes for over a month."

It certainly was tough, and after this anything better will seem like luxury to you. In the last Army & Navy Register which came last night, it gives the names of those receiving the D.S.C. and among them is Col Bearss and Major Lewis for their work

of you — Henry Culloden writes that he is "as pleased as if some one had left him a bunch of money"!! and so forth — Uncle Will Panton wrote thanking me for your photo (he had not yet heard of the decoration but said you were the "handsomest of Soldiers" & that he & Aunt Lily were delighted to have your photo & that Mother or my mother ? had sent them the Boston Globe article & that it was "plain that you had greatly distinguished yourself" & hoped if you were anywhere near Kathleen or Kenneth that you would call on them — I gave you Kenneths address long ago — he is "A.C. of the Canadian General Hospital — 14 — at Eastbourne Sussex" — & is a very stylish fellow a Leut Colonel, I believe [underlined] a full Col - but am not sure — Kathleen is still with the Canadians at La Treport in France. I will find the address later when I go down stairs. She was a "Nice" in November on a two week furlough
