Highly esteemed friend.

Your tender and thoughtful letter dated May 1st from Berlin, was more to me than you anticipated. The admiration and tender regard that you have ever been held in by my husband and myself, made your

words of encouragement and support doubly welcome to me, and they came at a time when I felt that I needed the support and strengthening thoughts of strong thinking men like yourself. The Ross incident seems very trivial to me in comparison with the lack of good management the affair received. Throughout the entire matter I have been absolutely silent, considering the less said on my part the better. But I have been intensely anxious, to such a degree that it has effected my health, fearing some serious damage would be done to the University and its work that could not be

can in my feeble way.

I thank you sincerely for your kind invitation to come to Berlin before the middle of June. It is impossible for me to accept as I have made arrangements to go to Kissingen for the cure, and, following Kissingen, I spend a month in the mountains of Bavaria for an aftercure. Again let me thank you and your highly esteemed wife for your sympathy, your encouragement and your good will.

Yours gratefully,

Mrs Leland Stanford

Highly prized friend:-

Your communication dated May 10th reached me, and it is needless to add, has given me sincere pleasure and satisfaction.

From the very first conception my husband had in regard to starting the University to the memory of our loved one, he had you in his mind as an adviser and helper. You probably remember what, to us, was a very memorable visit, at your home in Ithica. Your interest at that early date, your sympathy and your willingness to aid in selecting the best man for a President, was always remembered with tenderness by

representing the "Crucifixion" and the third, the "Ascension". Between these windows, and all around the apse, is mosaic work representing the Glory of the life of our saviour. This mosaic work represents a large number of figures 19 ft. high. Below these, in the center, I have an exact copy in mosaic of the "Lord's Supper" in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, and on either side of this, to finish the apse, are all the old Prophets of the Bible in Mosaics. Under these mosaics there are niches cut into the solid stone for the twelve apostles in Carrara marble, which are exact copies of the Apostles in the Church of St. John Lateran in Rome. I had these executed by the firm of Bernieri & Co. at Carrara, Italy. I visited Carrara last fall on purpose to see the ex

I prefer there should be but 1500 or 2000, and never to exceed that limit, and then have the best there is to be had in the way of Professors and necessary facilities for a superior education. My common sense tells me that if the desire to have a large number of students is carried out, the Institution will always be kept poor, and there will never be an end of the needs, and with an income of a million dollars a year the Institution could be kept crippled and needing more than the interest could afford. I am very anxious indeed to have Stanford University send out to the world the best and noblest men and women that ever went forth from any university
