This volume, containing chronologically arranged papers mounted and bound around 1840, provides comprehensive documentation of the College commons around the turn of the 19th century. In particular, the volume documents the role the Steward played in overseeing the Commons. The records chiefly consist of the quarter reports of the Committee assigned to review the Steward's accounts. Other documents include lists of utensils, bills for dinners for the Corporation, Overseers, and Commencement, regulations, lists of abatements for students' quarterly bills, and information on kitchen staff.

To the Honourable U Reverend the Corporation of Harvard College Gentlemen.

The Necessity of my circumstances constrains me to trouble you with the presentation I now make, in the time you were at Concord you were pleased to grant me thirty pounds untill [sic] you returned to Cambridge you cut off two hundred u ten pounds which I think was not equivalent to what I ought to have had. I was at a considerable expence [sic] in sending a Man u [?] Sundry times to concord u obliged to get a gentleman to do my bussiness [sic] there I do not desire any thing for the persons I {hired?} in the College Service for that time, as for last year Mr Hunnewell u [?] nearly had double to what [?] to give them the expence [sic] of servants I employ though they are of my own family cost me the same proportion, the necessary support of my family, is more than three times as expensive, as it used to be ----------So that my salary at present is but a small proportion Your petitioner therefore prays for such consideration as may kindly be granted to him. I am gentlemen Your Humble Servant -------------------[?] Hastings, {College?} {Steward?} Cambridge Sept 1; 1777
