I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 18th inst requesting that the Assistant Treasury of the United States at San Francisco, Cal. be instructed to buy a check drawn by Austin Wiley late Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Calafornia [California] for four hundred and thirty dollars now held by [Initials?] Lake. The necessary [illegible?] has this day ben sent.

Sir
In reference to the subject of the purchase of improvements in Hoopa Valley, and of the personal property of settlers therin, submitted to this Office by communications from your predecesor dated March 22nd I have to state that the papers in the case were referred to the Secretary of the Interior with report of April 22nd ult, of which copy is enclosed, as well as of the Secretary's decision thereupon. There remaining some doubt as to whether it was intended that the personal property was intended to be embraced in the amount for which appropriation was made by Congress, the subject was again referred to the Secretary, and of his decision thereupon dated June 9th inst, a copy is enclosed as a basis for the instructions herein I transmit a copy of the act of Congress of March 3rd 1865 appropriately [$60,000?] to pay for the improvements and lest proper copies of the papers in the case may not have been retained, I also forward copies of all that have been laid before the Department. An examination of these various enclosures will enable you to apprehend the instructions for your guidance, which follow:
The law of March 3/65 contemplating a new [appraisal?] by the "Superintendent of Indian Affairs, the Indian Agent at the reservation, and the Surveyor General of California," you will immediately on the receipt of this

Department of the Interior. Washington D.C. Dec. 9. 1865. Sir. I return herewith, the letter of Con. J. M. Bidwell, requesting that Geo. M. Hanson be authorized to visit Washington for the purpose of settling his accounts as late Superintending Indian Agent for the Northern District of California. The views expess in your commuication of the 6th inst. as to the inexpediency of permitting Subordinte of ficers of your Bureau. is a general rule, to visit this city at the expense of the Government, are approved, and without doult should be applied in the case of Mr. Hanson, now not in the service; unless you should become satisfied that

I have to acknowledge the recipt of your letter of the 19 instant (of December) enclosing copy of communication from Charles Maltby, [illegible] of Indian Affairs for California relating among other things to the inadequacy of the aprropriation for the pay of physicians in that state. Copies of these communications have been transmitted to the committees on Indian Affairs, of both houses of Congress, and their attention called to the matter.
