of the lot before 1879. I cannot compare its appearance in past years with the present. The lot was certainly not in good order when it came under the care of the Corporation in 1879 and you gave then special direction as to certain repairs which were wanted on the lot, which were made.

As to the matter of the shade, my experience has always been that it made a great deal of difference, and that the effects of such shade and the roots of the trees were particularly seen in very dry or very wet seasons.

Dear Sir

I send you tracings of M^r Atherton’s lot # 1725. The figures in black show the distance from his line to the inside of the adjoining lots, and the figures in red to the outside, so that if he took all the land between the Lawrence lot and #1853 he would get 4⁰⁰/100 feet & 5⁰⁰/100 feet equal to 9⁷⁰/100 from the back, and 4⁰⁰/100 ft & 5⁰⁰/100 feet equal 9⁰⁰/100 on the front, which would make an addition of 246 square feet. The price of additions on avenues has been not less than $1⁵⁰ per foot which is the price which I wrote to M^r Atherton about a year ago.

Mr Lawrence said he was cutting the shade tree up to his curbs. I suppose if he wants all on the side next to #18[?], that the owner of [1853?] ought to be consulted.

Dear Sirs

No plants were put in the lots (1421 &1705) for care of which you made a deposit, because the funds have not been sufficient. The deposit was made in June 1879 and while it can have been at interest but little more that a year, the expenses of 1879 and 1880 - two years- has been charged to the lot. I do not think the funds are sufficient to keep the lots in good order and provide flowers.

By our rules all plans of tombs are subject to the approval of the "Committee on Lots." If you will kindly send me a plan of the proposed changes, I will have it submitted to them & returned to you with as little delay as possible.
