Nancy (Brig) of Rochester, Nathan Briggs, master, Seth Barlow, second mate, keeper, on voyage from New York to Gothenburg March 26, 1810- May 28, 1810. Journal volume confiscated by the Danes for seven months while Barlow and his shipmates were taken onboard the Danish privateer North Star and later confined at Trondheim. (See NBW 1270, May 29, 1810-September 13, 1810). Journal recommences back onboard the Nancy, January 20, 1811- May 20, 1811 bound for Newry, Ireland.

Saturday May 6th --------------------------------------------------------------- This Day a Multitude of rane which came Down the Declivity of the Mountains in torrents and tumbled into the Bay

at 10 Oclock the Boat went up to the Point and returned at 10 at Nite, with a fine Quarter of Beef, Wind at N.E.

A Boat on board all Day, a Brig went up and 2 or 3 Down --------------------------------------------------------------- 1911 Carlingford --------------------------------------------------------------- Monday May 7th --------------------------------------------------------------- This Day fresh winds at S.E. attended with a Great Quantity of hard rane, and thick Weather. At half Past 4 in the Morning began to get our Anchors at Eight had them both on the Bows. Set the trySail Jib and foretopmast StaySail and Moved up towards Newry, Pased Some very Delitesome Seats ornamented with a variety of trees of Different kinds at 9 came to an Anchor again in 2½ F= of Warter, Just below the Village of Werren Point a Wind Mill on the one hand and a Church on the Other. In the afternoon Borrowed the Bedifords Boat and took our Stream Anchor to the Westward, also [heard?] the Cablin of Deals &c another officer came on board, [Prehaps?] to keep the first honest. --------------------------------------------------------------- 1811 Carlingford

This Day very Strong Gales at S.E. with a large Quantity of Rane

Served out Cable in the best order and made an overhaul between Decks

The Capt went on Shore in the Morning and returned in the Evening emty handed as to any News relateing to our Cargo At 4 Oclock had two Smart

Claps of [large flowery script] Thunder

and a Sudden Shift of Wind for a few moments to the West and N.W. but it Soon came to its point again with rane ----------------------------------------------------------------- Teusday April 8 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Warrens Point 1811 ----------------------------------------------------------------- This Day a Plenty of Rane and fog and hard Gales at S.E. we are on the ground at every ebb Tide, there are 13 Sail of Vessels lying at this Place at this time 5 of them Americans as follows Ship Bediford Boston Do difering State Philadelphia Do Wiscaset Brig Thomas Newbedford, Do Nancy Rochester Got in order to Discharge, loosed all Sails and to air, the Boat on Shore Several times The Kings Boat along Side in the morning; Wrote A Letter to Parents in America, took Some Bread and Beer on (the Board, thus ends Day. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Wensday April 9th ----------------------------------------------------------------- [very large flowery letters]Warrens Point

This Day moderate Gales at S.E. with Showers of Rane, Samuel left us for Belfast his home and Place of Nativity, --- Capt gone up to Newry Imployed at Scrapeing Masts and Booms, and paythim with Fallow, Loosed all our Sails fore and aft. After Dry furled them again at noon Swang fowl of the Ship Bidiford, in Consequence we hove in on our Cable and got clear, Got our StudingSail Booms up, and took the Mats from off the Yards,--- At 4 Oclock P.M. Borrowed the Ships long Boat, and took up our Stream Anchor, and Placed it more to the North. Several Boats along Side So ends the Day. [large, bold flowery, centered] Hard Gales One of our Officers So Superstitious that he will not eat no kind of Fleash on a Fryday Several Boats Passing to and from the Rising States with Passengers and baggage, also the Kings Boat Passed Several times. Saturday, May the 11th ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This Day very Strong Gales at the S.E. with Showers of rane, --- Imployed at Sundries and Got in order for a [Liter?],--- Overhawled Some Blocks, [thrumed?] Some Mats, one hand at Scrape ing the Sides, and another at overhawling Riggin, took on board, Some Potatoes, Some Bread and many articles of Cabbin Furniture, --- Put 3 Letters on board the Ship Rising State for Philadelphia, one to Seth Barlow One to Stephen S. Wing One to Joseph Davis Jr One of our Roman Catholick Officers Still holds his Integrty and will eat no meat, while his fellow is Blowing him, --- No Liter this Day, the Kings Boat called along Side, So ends the Day ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remarks on board the good Brig Nancy ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Warrens Point ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Saturday, May 125h This should have been Sunday Wrote by Mistake ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First of this Day fresh Winds at S.E with a moderate Stream of Rane Just for a rarity, lasted Part of the Day flattering and Calm with but a Little falling Weather. 1811 Warrens Point --------------------------------------------------- Sunday May 12th --------------------------------------------------- This Day Moderate Winds and Shifty, attended with a great Deal of Rane, Began to Discharge at 4 Oclock in the Morning. Cleard the Decks of Deals. took off the Hatcher, and began to [lake?] out of the Hole. Delivered 1,500 Whole Deals 1,300 ½ Deals Early in the Morning the Ship [large flowery script]Rising States Sailed for North America, with upwartds of 60 passengers on Board, at noon She Anchored At Carlingfore for 2 hours and then Sailed again.--- fresh gales this Evening So ends this Day. --------------------------------------------------- Remarks on board Brig Nancy --------------------------------------------------- [large flowery script] Newry --------------------------------------------------- May Wensday 14th --------------------------------------------------- This Day for the Most Plesent Weather, in the Morning, flattening and Calm, with one or two Brisk Thunder Showers, which put us off from from our Work for few moments, in the evening fresh Winds from the S.E. which brought in three Vessels a Brig a Sloop and a Galliot at 10 Oclock had the first Liter Landed, and the Second along Side, all hands Imployed in Discharging Deals. Delivered--- a Quantity [large bold flowery script] John Newport left us for Newry, to take the Stage for Dublin So ends the Day
