Nancy (Brig) of Rochester, Nathan Briggs, master, Seth Barlow, second mate, keeper, on voyage from New York to Gothenburg March 26, 1810- May 28, 1810. Journal volume confiscated by the Danes for seven months while Barlow and his shipmates were taken onboard the Danish privateer North Star and later confined at Trondheim. (See NBW 1270, May 29, 1810-September 13, 1810). Journal recommences back onboard the Nancy, January 20, 1811- May 20, 1811 bound for Newry, Ireland.

Remarks on board Norway Brig Nancy in the River ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday Jany 22nd This Day Moderate Weather Somewhat Cloudy. Wind at S.W. took on board one Liter of Deals one of [Stubstats?], two Boat Loads of Wood and Provisions from the House, a Quantity of Bread from the Bakers, also Bent the ForeSail and ForetopmastStaSail Got in order for going into the Bay, left one Dollar with a Shoemaker, Paid the Pilot 2 Shillings for Brandy So ends this Day Blowing a Gale at S.W. and all in [or?] up [anmes?] at our House Bundling up our Duds &c-- &c, &c, &c,&c, &c,&c, &c,&c, &c,&c, &c, &c, ------------------------------------------------------------------- Wensday Jany 23rd This Morning took on Board the remainder of our Household Goods, at 9 Oclock the Pilot Came on board, unmoored but the Wind blowing a gale moored again on the Back Land Side, took Several artiles on Board from the shore at 8 oclock in the evening, Swung athwart the River, which Caused us Some Labour and trouble, hard Squalls of rane and Snow. Recd of Capt Briggs -- 30 [lire?] D. For a Case -- 3 1⁄2 For a [hanker?] -- 4 1⁄2 7 lbs of Cloth -- 10 1⁄2 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday Jany> 23rd

This Morning fine Breezes at the Westward and Clear Weather, the Pilot and a Small band of Soldiers came on Board at 7 Oclock, unmoored, and Made Sail and Beat out into the Bay, Came to and anchor with the Small Bower, and Moored with the Stream Anchor, got in order to take Deals again, So ends the Day rather Cold. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Fryday Jany 25th

this Day Commences with Severe Gales at the Westward attended with thick and Rainy Weather, at 8 Oclock A.M. gave her more Cable, and overhaswled a range of the Best Bower Cable and Pointed the Yards to the Wind, at 10 gave her more Cable Still, all hands Imployed at Drawing and [Flinthing?] and Makeing Spunyarn, Stilll blows heavy and ranes Hard.

Norway 1811 -- Remarks on board Brig Nancy in the Bay -- Norway -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trontheim, Norway Saturday Jany 26th -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday Jany 26th The First of this Day very Severe Gales at West, Stood the Decks the most of the Nite, Sleeted harse as occation required, hard Rane, Middl Part of the Day more Moderate wind at N.W. with Steady Snow, Imployed at the Old [Priest?], the Steavodore came on Board and Stowd away Some Deals, found her to Leak about as Usual, Latter Part of the Day, more Wind and much Snow at Low water, the Brig grounded, but being no Sea The bay as Still as a Church -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trontheim Sunday Jany 27th -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First of this Day fresh winds at the Westward with Snow, latter part more Moderate, Wind at the South and Cold, Cleared the Decks of a large Quantity of Snow, went on Shore in the evening and returned at 5 Oclock, half the crew on Shore Still, D. . .S . . .D ch Paid for a Pair of Boots . . .16,,0,,0,,16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trontheim Monday Jany 28th -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Day moderate Gales at from W. to S.W. Part Clear and Part Cloudy attended with Some Snow, and Severe Cold throughout. Cleared the Decks of a Quantity of Snow Hove up our Small Anchor, and weighed our Stream Anchor with the Long Boat, dropt out from the Shore a little further, and let go our anchor again in 20 fathoms of Warter, Carried out our Stream Anchor on the Larboard Bow to the Eastward, and Moored in Proper order, took on board one Liter of Stone Ballace which is Stowed in the wings, and One Liter of Deals, The Stevadore and one other Man to work on Board, Find the Brig to Leak more than Common, The Coulars at the fort, Castle, on Board of Ships, and at other Places Flying, in honor of the Kinges B. D. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Norway Jany Tuesday 29th -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part of this Day clear, and Part Cloudy, attended with Snow, Wind at the Westard in the forenoon Imployed at makeing Spunyarn, In the Afternoon took on board 2 Liters of Deals, and Stowed them away. One Man besides the Stevadore on board to Work, 2 Ships Dropt out to the Castle ready for Sea, So ends the Day in Snow

Severe Cold, with Snow, Cleared the Decks of a Quantity of it, also Cleared out between Decks, in Order for Cargo, took Board two Liters of Deals and a long Boat of [Steelshots?] from the Ware House, Stowed the Most of them together with the Deals, one Man and the Stevadore to Work on Board, Clinched the best Bower Cable to the Mainmast, In the Afternoon two Custom House Officers came on board and Put on the Drontheim Seal uppon the after Part of the Main Hatches ---------------------------------------------------------- Drontheim Thursday Jany 31st _______________________ This Day fresh winds at S.W. attended with Snow Squalls In the morning took a Punchion of Warter below to Save the Cask from Bulging which is already done, Cleared the Decks of Snow and Ice, Took in one Liter of Deals and a Long Boat load of Deal Ends from Mr [Cuersons?] Ware House, the Main Hole full, and a Liter load on Deck 7 or 8 Vessels Lying in the roads ready for Sea find the Brig to Leak more and more, One man besides the Stevadore to Work on board the Nancy, So ends this Day ---------------------------------------------------------- Drontheim Fryday Febuary 1st _______________________ The first of this Day Moderate Gales at S.W. and Clear, latter Strong Gales at S.S.E. with Some Snow, and Sever Cold, Several Vessels have gone out,-- Cleared the Decks of Ice and Stowed them with Deals,-- Hoisted in the Long Boat, and Stowed her with Wood, took one Liter of Deals on board, and one Dozen of Spars, Stowed the Starboard State Room with Deal Ends,-- A Stevadore and one other MAN to Work on board, find the Brig to Leak very bad, So ends the Day - - - - Secured the main hatches- - - - ---------------------------------------------------------- Drontheim Saturday Febuary 2nd _______________________ This Day fresh winds at S.S.W. and moderate on the Account of the Cold, Loaded the Sailes fore and aft and beat out the Ice, Stowed the Cabin and made a lumber Yard of it, finished the Starboard State room Cleared the Decks fore and aft, rove Some running riggin and many other Jobs, took 9 Quarters of Drontheim, Latter one Barrel, The Young Man that Put his things on Board Yesterday in order to go Passenger, took them out again to Day,-- Understand the Brig Nancy is Cleared So Ends the Day and Week, all well, Paid, 2 Shillings

1811 -- Remarks on board the Nancy Lying at an Anchor in the Harbour of Drontheim _______________________ Drontheim Fryday Feby 8th _______________________ This Day fine Weather lite Winds and Variable One Ship came out of the Elve and Anchored under the Castle, Set up the Foretopmast back Stays, Spred our Sails and Dryed them, Two Men at Spinning Spunyarn Repaired the Maintopgallant Sail, and bentt it, besides many other Jobs belonging to Ships Duty, Paid for a Pair of Sols, 2 Shillings Nosk Money _______________________ Drontheim Saturday Febuary 9th _______________________ First Part of this Day slattering and Shifty winds, latter Part, fresh winds from N,W, to N,E, Squally with Hale, Rane and Snow, hove in upon the Small Bower, and vered out on the Stream Cable, Filled one kask and one Barrel of Warter, and took them on board, Marked a Log line, and hung a New Grind Stone &c, at 10 Oclock a Small Schooner went out with a lite wind at the N.E.--but Soon took the Wind at West, and returned, A Brig also came in and let go her Anchors at the Castle,--The North Star Privateer, which Stopt us on our Lawful Voyage, came out of the river and Moored near us, Thus ends the Day and Week. _______________________ Drontheim Sunday Febuary 10th _______________________ This Day lite Winds from N.W. to S.S.W. Clear for the [more?] Part, with a few Squalls of Snow In the Morning Roused in the Slack of the Stream Cable and the lumber, cleared of Snow, In the Afternoon the greater Part of the Crew on Shore, the Brig that Anchored at the Castle last evening went into the river This Day, She has been on the rocks, and leaks very bad, through the Goodness of God, I have been persearved to See another Birth Day, altho many miles from my Native Country, May Heaven favour us with a Pleasant Breeze, and carry us Clear of Danger, and Set us on the Spot where our minds are Centred, thus ends the Day _______________________ Drontheim Monday Jan 11th _______________________ This Day moderate Gales at S.E. both Clear and Cloudy, Loosed the Sails fore and aft to Dry, All hands Imployed in making Spunyarn, [Sinnet?] and gaskets,-- A Young man maDe applycation for Passage,--2 Schooners and 1 Brig Sailed with a fine and pleasant Breeze, So ends this Day

1811 -- Remarks on board the Nancy rideing at an ANCHOR, in the Bay of Drontheim Norway _______________________ Drontheim Teusday Febuary the 12, _______________________ This Day a fine Wind from the S.E. to ENE, this favour able Wind is the first we have had for many Weeks Past, All hands Imployed in making Spunyarn and [Sinnit?], Veered out to the long Service of the Stream Cable, Another Gentleman Called on board for a Passage,-- A Great Sea heaving in and but Moderate winds The Nancy's Cargo is as Follows [Whole?] Deals -- 491 Dozen Single Half Do -- 103 Do, Deal Ends -- 107 Do, Double Do -- 40 Do- -- - of 14 [Feet?] Do- - -- -Do -- 13 Do Do- - - 12 Do- - - - Do -- 7 Do,- - Do- - 10 Do- - - - Do -- 18 Do, - Do - -8 Together with 12 Small Spars constitutes the Whole, making in all about [7,000 ?]Dozen allowing 6 Score to the Hundred,- - - - - So ends the Day _______________________ Drontheim Wensday Febuary 13th _______________________ This Day Strong Gales at E by N attended with a considerable Sea Some Snow and Severe cold, at 6 A.M. brought the Sream anchor Home, Veered out on the Small Bower to the long Service, which brought to the Work,--Pointed the yards to the Wind, Fluted the [herse?] as occation required, --at 4 P.M. hove in to the Short Service on both Cables,--Housed the Maintopgallantmast at 6 a Vessel bottom upwards drifted under our Stern where She Still rides, by Some means or other, So ends the Day, _______________________ Drontheim Wensday Febuary 14th _______________________ The Small Craft that Passesd us last evening Bottom up got fast to our Cable where She hung till we let her go astern, This Morning most Severe cold, The Steem from the Warter ascended [full?] as high as the Main Crosstrees, and as thick as a fog, froze to every thing it came in Contrast with, Not a Man called uppon to Perform any kind of Duty whatever, Wind from N.E. to S.W. and from S.W. to N.E. again, Some Squalls of Snow, Cleared the Decks and the harse,--The [Limbner?] came on board to take a Profile for the Capt Ready for Sea but lack a Pilot
