Nancy (Brig) of Rochester, Nathan Briggs, master, Seth Barlow, second mate, keeper, on voyage from New York to Gothenburg March 26, 1810- May 28, 1810. Journal volume confiscated by the Danes for seven months while Barlow and his shipmates were taken onboard the Danish privateer North Star and later confined at Trondheim. (See NBW 1270, May 29, 1810-September 13, 1810). Journal recommences back onboard the Nancy, January 20, 1811- May 20, 1811 bound for Newry, Ireland.

1811 Carlingford --------------------------------------------------- Wensday May 15th --------------------------------------------------- The first of this Day Showry, and Moderate Weather latter part Strong Gales at S.E. with hard flying Clouds, 2 or 3 Sloops and Galiots arrived The Brig that came in last evening is one of the fleet that left Christian Sound on the 13th of April.-- In the forenoon all hands Imployed at Discharging [in large bold letters]Deals at noon had the [Savage?] Liter loaded. In the Afternoon Busied in [baring?] out Between Decks, took the Deals from under the Cables, and Coiled them anew. Loosed the MaintopSail Topgallant to Dry, also made a small [Refermation?] fore and aft. Cleared harse &c. So ends the Day. --------------------------------------------------- Brig Nancy Newry --------------------------------------------------- [large bold flowery] Thursday May 16th --------------------------------------------------- This Day very Pleasant and fine Weather Wind South Easterly, Loosed all our Sails Dryed and handed them three hands Imployed at Scrapeing. Got the foretop gallant riggin overhead, took the Deal out of the Starboard State rooms, and Stowed them on Deck. took on board 1 Barrel of Pork put up for the English Navy., A Quantity of Potatoes Recvd of Capt [Brugge?] as Wages 2,, 6= this Morning hoisted out the Long Boat, and Scraped her from Stem to [Stearn?], Some Small Craft arrived, Paid to a Wild Irish Boy 2,,6c for Washing. So ends this Day.

This Day most Beautiful weather. Clear and Pleasant, lite winds and variable, round the Compass Several times in the Course of the Day Silas Briggs gone to Newry. Imployed an Irish Mam to work in his Stead--- Two Men at Scrapeing, and two at Scrubing and mending Sails, took out a Quantity of Deals and Piled them on Deack. --- Unbent, the Foresail ForetopSail and try Sail,--Discharged no Cargo, being Disappointed in regard to a Liter. Two Briggs arrived, the one an American from Liverpool. looks much like a Mattepoisett built Vessel.--where the other is from or what Country man She is. I have not heard.-- also a Brig Sailed for London, with two or three Schooners ____________________________________________ [written vertically in margin] 1811 Brig Nancy ________________________________________ [written large] Carlingford ___________________________________________ [written vertically in margin] Saturday May 18th __________________________________________ The first of this Day fine and Clear weather latter part Cloudy. Strong gales at N.W. with rane, took on board 1 Barrel of Warter and one of Beer.-- The Capt gone to Newry to See about a Liter-- Discharged Nothing, Two Men at Scrapeing, and one at Sailmakeing.-- got the foretopgallant mast in and-- and Set up the riggin--Sent Down the Maintopgallant Yard and Unbent the Sail Also unbent the MaintopSail, Foretopmast Stay Sail and Jib, last evening a report that all american Vessels are Stopt in England, Recd of CaptBriggs--------------£0..S6..d0 Wages Paid for a Hat---------------------£0..S6..d3---- This ends this Day, in Strong Weather

1811 Warrens Point -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday May 19th -------------------------------------------------------------------- This Day Strong Gales at N.W. and Clear Weather at 10 Oclock landed on old Ireland for the first time at the Place Called Warren Point--- got on Board a Carriage Called a jolting Car and Proceeded to Newry which is 6 Miles and an half--- lay on the Margin of the River on the one Side and a Cemented Wall on the Other--- Backed with Beautiful Gardens -- extensive medows rich Groves, Mountain Values &c-- an the whole a plesent Walk--- at noon entred the town found it to be exactly as Discribed by Dean Swift which is as follows A high Church Without a Steeple Dirty Streets--- and a Proud People, took a Surveigh of every Street, the Canal, Publick buildings and every thing worth Notice. Met with many Beggars, Spent and gave away 10 Shillings, at 4 P.A. took a [Jingle?] and returnd Thus ends the Day -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1811 Ireland -------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday May 20th -------------------------------------------------------------------- This Day Strong Gales and Shifty, Clear weather The Kings Boat came along Side Imployed at Sundries, Two Men at Blacking Spars, two at riggin and the rest at Sail maik[-]. took on board 2 Small Kasks of Warter 1 Quarter of Beef Rec'd of Capt Briggs £0,,S5,,d0 Wages of Selvanus--- 1,2,,6 [Lent?] Paid for Paper --- 3,,4 At 6 Oclock the Savage Liter came along Side for the remainder of the Deals and Deals Ends at [9?] had them on Board, two Briggs Sailed and two Arrived, the American Brig from Leverpool which was Built in Newbedford hove up her Anchors and Came near us
