Larissa is surrounded by marshes and swamps,
among lands that are deserted until you reach
the ill-fated and justly-rebuked valley,
the place that was punished by God with fire.^1Sodom.
Here there is a high mountain, and then a little further north
are the flanks of Mount Sinai,
on top of which the Divine Law was issued^{2That is, given by God to Moses.}
and Saint Catherine [of Alexandria] is buried.

Halfway between Larissa and Beirut
is the port^{2The port city of Jaffa or Joppa.} of the Holy Land.
This should be the property of the one
who claims to be the leader of the Christians.^{3This is probably criticism of contemporary popes' failure to call a Crusade to reclaim the Holy Land.}
This is where the High King [David] held his throne,
who made the work that is sung every day.^{4In the Middle Ages King David was assumed to be the author of the Psalms, which were recited and sung as part of the "work" of daily devotional practice.}
This is also where the Holy Sepulcher of Jesus is
and where he was crucified for us.

This is Zion ^{5Another name for Jerusalem.}, the capital of Judea,
toward the East and a little to the right.
To the left of that is Galilee

as well as Acre, Tyre, Sidon, and Mount Lebanon,
