Untitled Page 6

in public life ever left a more
spotless record of fidelity and honesty.

History fails to present a man who
so grandly improved the opportunity of
a life, to munificently concsecreate his
collosal wealth to the benefaction of
his race, as Leland Stanford.

In public life he was honored and respected,
in private life he was loved
by all, and in future generations his
name will be enrolled among the great men
of the past.

His nobility of purpose, and the grandeur
of his impulses, with the good wrought
to mankind, will far outlive the massive
monument of marble and stone that stand
upon the plain and mark the spot where
the greatest educational institution on the
face of the earth now stands.

As I gazed upon the kind face
of all that is earthly, lay in his final
resting place free from pain and sorrow
I recalled the many kind
words of cheer and comfort that
came from his lips, and the many
acts of kindness to me, and I felt
that my best friend had gone forever.

May God give you strength
to bear up under this great affliction
in this, the hour of your distress,
and rest assured that no one of
your friends feels more keenly
the loss, or is more in sympathy
with you, than your Sincere friend,
