in public life ever left a more spotless record of fidelity and honesty.

History fails to present a man who so grandly improved the opportunity of a life, to munificently concsecreate his collosal wealth to the benefaction of his race, as Leland Stanford.

In public life he was honored and respected, in private life he was loved by all, and in future generations his name will be enrolled among the great men of the past.

His nobility of purpose, and the grandeur of his impulses, with the good wrought to mankinds, will far outlive the massive monument of marble and stone that stand upon the plain and mark the spot where the greatest educational institution on the face of the earth now stands.

As I gazed upon the kind face of all that is earthly, lay in his final resting place free from pain and sorrow I recalled the many kind words of cheer and comfort that came from his lips, and the many acts of kindness to me, and I felt that my best friend had gone forever.

May God give you strength to bear up under this great affliction in this, the hour of your distress, and rest assured that no one of your friends feels more keenly the loss, or is more in sympathy with you, than your Sincere friend,
