Last week I Returned from my Journey to Rhoad Island and Connecticut I doubt not but you have heard [illegible] Mr. Devenport and of His Conduct I had not the opportunity of Hearing of Him but by all that I could Learn I can: not but think he is an Excellent man It is [Latterly??] Seem to be wonderfully Blessd he has [illegible] many of their ministers but as to His Refusing to examin by Scripture is false, but the reason of His Condemning of them in Publick is because that he thinks that they do more Hunt than, Good for Says He they Jumble the Law and Gospel together in Such a manner that it is verry [gap] rous hearing of them, yesterday arrived Cap [gap] from London with Letters from Mr. Whitefield he meets with great opposition but the work Increases there verry much, we dont expect him here before the Spring, in great haste from

Dear Bro, You have several times desired that I would write to you but I have found a great backwardness to it from my not being able to give you any account of my Christian Progress, O my Dear brother my life looks very dark I fear I have a name to live whilst dead. I do not seem to have any relish for spiritual things. (O that a day of Gods Power might pass even my but notwithstanding motivating my love look so very dubious yet you cannot think how unconcerned I am. I can compare my self to nothing so if of the Door open the Hinges I go from Duty to Duty from day to day and cannot find I get forward in the least but I seem to live upon dutys. O that I could once center all on Christ. I hear you have been very ill but that you are growing better, I hope the sickness of your body will be for the health of your soul. May your spared life be a devoted life. What obligations are we under from day to day to serve the Lord, o that I had heart to serve him. I hope you will write as soon as you are able and let me know how it has been with you in your sickness both as to soul & body, let me know by the first opportunity how you do, I suppose this day one Mr. Savage called to see you whom I believe is a true servant of Christ. I Remains. Remember me to Mr. Gilman & all that ask after me. PS: Note Mr. Davenport I write nothing for you will be able to have a final account from them who came from Boston that I can give you in writing.

of Mr S. so fully & fairly & contracts it with that of Mr G's so justly, that it must have a very powerful effect on every candid & unprejudiced reader.

I have been informed, by undoubted authority, that the omission of Mr Gerry's signature, was not owing to his absence, but to his disapprobation of the Constitution. I hope sir that you will favor us with another communication on this subject before election, as your knowledge of the principles & merits of the two Candidates, gives you peculiar advantages in a discusssion of this king.

Please to present my grateful & affectionate regards to Mrs Phillips & believe me to be with high respect & esteem Your obdt sevt J Phillips

Dear Madam Nov. 1763 I received a Letter from Betty the 23 instent where in she informs me that Capt Phillips ask’d her whether she had no mony at home, and told her if i pleased it has better be laid out in a Cloke and that you would be so good as to assist her in making it. I have sent her cloke which I suppose is come to her hands before now, if you think that will do with the alteration of a larger Head and trimming I should be glad, as to a winter gown I leave it to you as the chief of her mony is the product of Capt. Phillips, his Bounty, I am senseable there is great oddes between living in town and country and that she is expos’d much more to company, and therefore submit it to your wisdom and prudence. So according to her desire I have sent all her mony and doubt not of your goodness in laying it out most for her advantage I seem well satisfied with her being
