Newman that should have conducted these services. How unfortunate that he is so far away - but after all how little can any human being do or say to the bereaved heart. God alone is our refuge & from Him alone we desire comfort

The Hymns that were sung in church today were the 149-762-684 I admire the first & thought it so appropriate. The last, was my dear Hus bands favorite Hymn. I sat quite near your pew which was draped in mourning.

My dear Mrs Stanford

I have just returned from the Metropolitan Church. It was anounced last evening that there would be a memorial service for Senator Stan ford, this morning by Bishop Hurst at 11 O' O' clock. I had an engagement - or rather had promised a poor sick woman to go to the Hospital at 10, to see her & take her some fruit; but I wished to pay a respect to the mem ory of Senator Stanford and I know that you would be gratified by my doing

[so,?] so I arose at an early hour & accomplished both. I asked my friend Mrs Adml Bryson to accompany me & was home at 10.30 to keep my appointment with her. I felt anxious to hear all that was eulogistic about such a truly good and noble man - I remember so well when the admiral & myself met him on two or three occasions, at your receptions and were charmed by his great simplicity & sincerity of manner & character & felt that we would like to have known him better - I felt that he was one in whom one

might put the utmost confidence. I felt so grateful to him for the promise he gave me that he would take my Pension papers in September & I felt so sure, that if he did take them, he would have no trouble to have the bill passed - well never mind that God knows best. I feel as grateful to him as if it had been done.

Bishop Hurst said much that was good & interesting about your dear Husband but he said it was Bishop

Two sons only are married, one however, is a widower. A young er sister & I teach school, while our eldest sister was our housekeeper. Immediately after our mother's death, she became low-spirited and melancholy & we feared for her reason, but with careful nursing she came out all right. The improvement was only temporary, for in September her nervousness developed into insanity. Still we hoped for the best & prayed it would yield to treatment. Our sister Eve was a lovly character mild, loving & even-tempered, We doctored, we hoped, we pray ed, no improvement. A nurse took care of her during school hours, my sister & I the rest of the time, so it went on for a whole year, as I look back I thank God no harm or in jury befell her or us.

Mrs. Stanford:

Don't we feel at times as if God sends us more trouble than we can bear, but the back is fitted to the burden & Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can not heal

Dear Mrs. Stanford

Your husband was met by the holy angels as he went to join their band, and he knew his boy & yours, as he greeted him in that glorious spirit land.
