Dear Aunt Jennie:-
It was several days before I heard of Uncle Leland's death, as we are rather isolated here, and Mr. Wells was in New York City.
I cannot say in a letter, anything that will lessen so great a blow, but offer deepest sympathy and love to you, in your great sorrow. I feel the loss much, as I have always felt Uncle Leland to be more like my own

dear father, than any one else. On hearing of his sickness last winter, I wrote you directing to San Francisco. This, I think, you never received, as you started soon after, for Washington. Since then, I have been very dangerously ill, with pneumonia, and it is only two weeks ago, that I was able to come here, for the summer.
Again offering you my love, and with the hope and belief, that we will meet our dear ones in a happier world than this, where there is neither parting
