Mrs. Leland Stanford,
Dear Madam:
The collection of your dear son has arrived at the museum. The man who packed it seems to think that you have placed him in charge of arranging the collection in the rooms provided for it. If it is still your intention to have it arranged just as it was in your city home, I am positive that no one can do that accurately save Mr. Brooks and myself, who took the exact measurements of every piece and its position on the wall. I do not wish to intrude myself upon this work, if you have placed it in other hands, but I have by my work with your son's collection been inspired with a reverence and love for his things and his work; which makes me wish very much to have them reproduced here exactly as they were there. Will you, therefore, please let me know your wishes in

regard to this work as soon as possible, and I shall endeavor faithfully to carry them out. I have been waiting for some time in the hope that I might be allowed to see you, but now that I have taken the liberty of addressing you, permit me to ask one more question. You remember, the first time I had the honor of calling upon you, early in June, I asked if we might not, in order to supplement the collections, have some stereopticon-viewer to illustrate Greek Sculpture. You could not answer then, but said you would talk it over with Mr. Stanford and then give me answer. If your answer is favorable, we must have the order sent very soon, if we are to have the pictures in time for the beginning of the work in September. And, hoping that your answer will be for the pictures, I enclose a letter from Professor A. C. Merriam, of Columbia College, which contains the best

suggestion, both as to extent and economy, that I can elicit from any source.
Pardon me, dear Madam, for obtruding so far upon your time, but the first of my two questions I think important to yourself as well as to me, and the second is of very great interest to a large number of students who have expressed a desire to have that work with me, and I know you have the interests of the student body at heart; therefore I have presumed to raise the question once more.
Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain, your most humble and most obedient servant,
Walter Miller.

Villa Alexandria, Jacksonville Florida 25 August Dear Mrs Stanford You may have forgotten me, in the world of care you have had, but I have watched the papers carefully to learn the result of the contemptible movement of gov't in regard to your future. While you had your dear husband, not a word was said. I was delighted to see that you are free & can now carry out your numerous charities. May you live a long life & meet with only love & gratitude for your unselfish acts is the prayer of your true friend Mrs Alex Mitchell
