Same -- Bed 3 -- Rec'd copy of Congressional Directory -- 49th Cong from Senator Fair, Washington D.C. -- real bound copy, with my name, Alf Doten, stamped in gilt letters on the cover -- It is what I sent for a short time ago --

Saturday June 5

Clear & very pleasant -- Public Schools picnic from here to Treadways Park, Carson -- 15 cars, including 10 flats left here at 8 AM, took on 1 coach 2 flats at Gold Hill -- Big lot of women & children -- No accident nor trouble -- I as usual -- Bed 3 -- Expected wife up but she didnt come -- was down at depot to meet --

Reno Hot Seymour Pixley Dead

Sunday June 6

Clear & hot -- took 8 AM train for Reno -- At Carson Seymour Pixley has been found dead lying on the floor of his carpenter shop about 100 yds north of the RR depot & about 9 AM -- I went & took a look at him -- He had not been home to his family since the noon previously, and inquiry and search being made this morning resulted in finding him -- He lay on the floor on his back feet toward &

near door -- Autopsy resulted in finding he died of [ancurism?] of the heart -- I arrived in Reno on time at 12 N -- Going up street met Andrew Nicholls of Austin, & had pleasant chat -- Found folks all well -- Millie is at Lindsays & has been last three or four weeks, working for $3 per week at housework, Thermometer said 92 deg --

Bessies Family Suprise Party 92 deg Nicholls and Hinchcliffe in Reno

Evening cooler -- Wife & I & children sat on front porch before dark, & had banjo & songs -- Bessie got up little surprise party for us -- Had porch trimmed with a few locust limbs & sprinkled with water -- Then she & Goodie with little paper crowns on their heads, that Bessie had made, represented Maids of Honor to their Majesties the King and the Queen, myself and wife, & Sam & Alf were Pages -- Bessie treated us to a glass of lemonade all round, with a strawberry in each glass -- Very agreeable little family episode, and a genuine surprise to wife & I. About train time 8 PM I went down to the depot -- Met Nicholls and also C W Hinchcliffe there -- They are in as Representatives from Austin to the meetings of Grand chapter [RAN?], and

Old Doc Hiller Billy Birch

Grand Lodge, [RAN?] tomorrow and next day -- Sat & talked with them an hour or so in barroom of Depot Hotel -- Bed at 10

Monday June 7

Clear & warm -- Left Reno on time at 7:10 AM & arr at Va on time at 10 AM -- Found letter from Dr F Hiller, my old friend and coadjutor years ago in this city --

Now in S.F. wife dead & daughters all married -- wants to know about some mines here -- PM met Billy Birch down town was introduced and had long & pleasant chat -- Very agreeable gentleman -- Like him -- Also met Ben [Cotton?] -- Stood in lively on office work and at 8 went to Opera House -- Birch & Cotton's San Francisco Minstrels --

SF Minstrels "Statistician"

About 20 of them -- They paraded B & C streets, with brass band this PM -- Evening big house -- $624.50 receipts -- I was there -- A right jolly good minstrel show -- Everybody pleased -- Will play again tomorrow evening at Pipers -- Bed at 3:30 --

Tuesday June 8

The same -- 82 deg in the shad at 2 PM by John Gilly's thermometer -- The brass band of the Minstrels played on C street this PM in front of the 2 newspaper offices -- Joe Marshall delivered me my Statistician for 1886 -- Paid him $2.50 for it as I get it from McCarty at publishers rate, same as last year -- retail regular price, $4 --

The SF Minstrels Centennial 2 cts Tony Fox Killed

Evening I saw the closing portion of the Minstrels at Opera House -- Pretty fair house -- Bed 3 -- The Minstrels appear next at Reno, tonight, and next at Salt Lake --

Wednesday June 9

Same -- Wrote letter to Dr Fred Hiller Sr -- Tony Fox got killed about 10:30 this evening by accidental fall into pit of Big fly wheel at the Combination shaft works of which he was temporarily a night watchman -- Waited & saw his corpse brought

Thursday June 10

Windy & cooler -- As usual -- Sent letter to wife. enclosing pass -- Bought a shawl for my shawl strap traveling arrangement for $2, at Marris' dry goods store -- nice little dark grey woolen shawl for children -- much neater and cheaper than a valise or carpet bag -- Bed at 3 -- My next room neighbor, George Allen -- ("Pike") became 51 yrs old today -- Tony Fox will be buried Saturday -- He joined the Order of Chosen Freinds in this city about a year ago, and his insurance policy in the Order, gives his family $3,000 cash --

Friday June 11

Same -- Mining day -- Lively work -- Bed at 3 --

Saturday June 12

Cooler, in fact a comparatively cold snap, almost overcoat weather -- somewhat cloudy and much dusty -- work as usual -- Bed at 2:30 -- Letter from wife returning pass so I will go to Reno tomorrow -- this PM at 3 oclock I marched in funeral procession of Tony Fox, from Odd Fellows building down C street to Mill st, walked

with Lee Mcgown, Dr Delavan and Vincent Elliot were the only other Pioneers with us in the procession -- McG & myself switched off at Mill st & let the procession go on without us -- Long string of carriages --

At Reno Rain "Rex Magnus"

Sunday June 13

Cloudy & cold -- Rose at 6, as train time is changed to 7:20 -- & [to arrived?] in Reno at 11:30 -- Found folks all right -- Staid at home resting -- Evening banjo and songs -- 2 or 3 good showers during evening and night -- Bed 10

Monday June 14

Cloudy, cool and fresh -- rose at 6, breakfast -- Left on train at 7:10 -- Arrived Va at 10 AM -- Had rained in Carson and here a little -- About town as usual -- and work as usual -- Bed at 3:30 -- clear

Clear & pleasant -- As usual -- Bed 4 --

Wednesday June 16

Same -- Made 2 1/2 gallons of "Rex Magnus" today - 1/2 oz boracic acid, 1/2 oz salycilic acid, 1/2 bi-carb coda, 1 lb white sugar -- Bed 3 --

Same -- I bought a box, 10 lbs of splendid cherries at McGown's today for $1.50,
