Showery -- heavy showers before daylight and several light steady rains during the day -- muddy -- Plenty of snow visible on the mountains all around -- Sent letter to wife -- Bed 12 -- Still raining lightly -- Also sent letter to Kinzle, Nev City, Cal --

Tuesday Oct 22

Cloudy & cool -- moderate -- Got a bad cold somewhere today I think -- 5 PM was taken with severe chill then with vomiting & purging -- then fever with great thirst -- Was a depot when train came down from Va at 6:30 -- Pat Keyes on board bound for San Francisco, as our Keyes lawsuit comes up Nov 2 -- Had short chat with him -- Then sat by Arlington stove couple of hours -- Then to Dempsey's & sat awhile by stove -- Took a hot punch & went to bed at 11 -- Clear & cold -- the telegrams today from Hot Springs, Ark, say that the Corbett Fitzsimmons fight is declared off, by the Florida Athletic Club. This evening I put on my entire stock of underclothes --

Wednesday Oct 23

Clear & very pleasant -- Rec'd letter from wife inclosing one from Bessie and replied -- Bed at 10:30 -- sick from a fearful chill at 7 PM -- Don't understand -- But at 5 PM yesterday, was bad but this was worse, lasting me 3/4 of an hour -- very exhausting --
