To The Governor Of The Stae of Utah.— We, the under-signed citizens of the United States and residents of Billings Montana, respectfully petition you to extend executive clemency to Joseph Hillstrom now under sentence of death in the Stae of Utah. We feel that his defense has failed ,not through the merits of the evidence for conviction;which evidence is wholely circumstantial; but through the lack of finances for defense and through the animus of pred-atery capital which he has uncompromisingly fought as a labor agitater. We therefore petition you for the above reasons to pardon him or to commute his sentence. Emil Lanor [Nibs?] Alwin A.G. Barkdoll R. F. Barkdoll M.A. [Tlauagan?] L.[G?] Martin S.D. 1. BAER REINHARDT PRES. & LEGAL ADVISOR JEROME B. SABATH SEC. & TREAS 30 THIS PETITION CIRULATED BY THE 30 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ABOLITION OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS 261 BROADWAY, NEW YORK TO HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR SPRY and the HONORABLE BOARD OF PARDON OF THE STATE OF UTAH Honored Sir:— We, the undersigned, in no way affiliated with any Labor Organization and not being members of the National Assocation for the Abolition of Capital Punishment, believing that Joseph Hillstrom is an unfortunate victim of circumstance and further believing that there is a reasonable doubt as to his guilt of the murder for which he stands convicted and sentenced to die, respectfully beseach you to extend clemency and mercy and commute this sentence of death to life imprisonment, that he may yet have the opportunity to prove his innocence. Should he be executed and his innocence subsequently established nothing could be done to right the terrible wrong committed, and the stain upon the escutcheon of the state of Utah could never be obliterated.
