to speak to Mr. Hearford about the flag episode. He had a few highballs and was feeling good. We put our arms around each other and had a fine time talking it over. He thought I was a fine fellow and said that "If I had been in your place I would have tried to do the same thing." Had the pleasure of eating dinner with Josephine Miller. Mr. Melone made a spendid speach[speech] and so did Ex. Pres. Roosevelt. Four or five other notibles [notables] spoke, including a representative of the British War Envoy to America. A joint banquit [banquet] of both the British & French Envoys was held at the same time on the same floor as ours at the hotel. Tried to get Major Joffre to speak to us but was unsuccessful.
