passes. It got by fine. Went to sleep on the train & just happened to woke up as the train was pulling into Loupeign. (Went to see Notre Dame in Paris, and also Hotel de Villi in the afternoon.) Arrvied at Mt. Notre Dame 10:45. Clear night and I alighted from the train to the music of the big guns. The flashes lit up the whole sky. Had a long lonsome walk to camp. Arrived at 11:45. Had to find my blankets and make my bed. Mooved into Bill Elliot's remark with Le Tourneau.

train finally came along and we worked in along with some American ambulance permissionares and got aboard. We had to do this as we had no passes, and otherwise we would have had to sneak aboard. When the train pulled out we thought that we were joke, and we were untill we wanted to get off at Mt. Notre-Dame and there the train went through like a streak of lightning, and also through Loupeign. Pink and I had almost decided to go on to Paris, but in Reims they had taken our names and addresses

Convoy from Fere en Tardinois to Bucy le Long. Had to walk back from Loupeign for another car for Ben. No 7. went on the bum. Very heavy frost. The water in the radiators was frozen. Some job to get the cars started. Was in charge of the convoy. Saw a wonderful sight at Bucy. Was looking at a sausage that was nearly above us. I was very surprised to see both observers jump out. As soon as their parashute [parachute] opened I looked above the baloon [balloon] and saw the Boche plane. The sausage first wilted a little then fire started at one end. am on guard. Corporal of the guard. Not bad though, get eight hours at a stretch, and then I am through.

Shriver arrived with 60 cadets from Italy last night. We are layed off for a couple of days until the Italy fellows get a little practice on these machines. The Boche have Rheims, Soissons, and are back as far a Loupeign. I hope the Devils sleep well in the barracks we bult at Jouaignes. Pete Peterson just told me that we are only going to get $50.00 pay this month as our pay is cut to $75.00 and we got paid $100.00 last month when it should have been $75.00. I don't know where I am going to get off at with $25.00 alotment and insurance.

The dirty Boche are back to Fereen-Tardenois tonight. -- Stood muster at 4:15 this morning. A most unearthly hour for muster. Went on as corporal of the guard at eight o'clock. Have an eight hour stretch. Got off at 4 P.M. -- Received my commission and took my oath today. A liutenant was killed in landing tonight. Heard a very good talk and saw a good picture, "My Laddie's Slipper", at the Y.M.

The Boche have reached the Marn and are close to Chateau Lierre. We had big rumors in camp this morning about the
