John Sevier Governor in and over the State of Tennessee.

To the Sheriff of Sumner County.

Whereas His Excellency Christopher Greenup Governor of the State of Kentucky hath forwarded to me a transcript of an Indictment ^duly authenticated found and returned by the Grand Jury of the Circuit Court for Christian Circuit, in the said State of Kentucky against John Stewart for horse stealing, and have charged the said John Stewart with being a fugitive from Justice; And hath in due form demanded him of the Executive of this State, in conformity with the provisions of an act of the Congress of the United States, entitled "And Act respecting fugitives from Justice and persons escaping from the service of their masters," and Ihave been informed that the said John Stewart resides in Sumner County about a mile and a half from Cumberland River and about six miles above from Bledsoe's lick to the right of the road leading from said lick to Fort Blount. That he is a large well proportioned man dark complexion

Ido hereby require and command you to take the body of the said John Stewart and him confine, so confine and so secure him that you have him to deliver to the agent person who is or may be appointed as an agent by the Executive of the State of Kentucky to receive and conduct him to that State - As soon as you have arrested and secured the said John Stewart, you will please notify me of the same, and in the mean time if an agent from the State of Kentucky duly authorised to receive him should apply for the surrender of him, you are hereby required to deliver him to such Agent - In Testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand and caused the Great seal of the state to be affixed at Knoxville the 11th day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five

Knoxville June 27th. 1805.

Sir

John Stewart who has lately been demanded by your Excellency as a fugitive from the Justice of the state over which you preside, has been arrested and is now in custody of the Sheriff of Sumner County - I have instructed the Sheriff to deliver him to such person as may be authorised to receive and conduct him to Kentucky, and you will be pleased to appoint a person for that purpose, at as early a day as may be convenient.~
