ladies here are very kind & attentive Mrs. Richmond Mrs. Osmond gave me a selection of ferns. Mrs. Osmond [Ogilvie struck through, osmond written above] promised a letter of introduction to a party in Elgin. Mrs. Miller also a friend of Ehen of Edinr. is a good friend. Mrs. Phillips her son & young Dickson are newly arrd. from England
Feby. 28th. till March 8th.
omitted writing up journal to this time but nothing of importance has occurred been living at Mrs. Ogilvie's & going out some where every day. Dined over at Capt. Eales & with Mrs. Mr. Miller at the latter. Met Mrs. Hughesdon from Akyab pretended to have partialy for- got me. [scored through: got] We have prayers before breakfast @ 9 dinner

A man killed by lightning much rain @ 3 Tea @7 & then have some music in the evg. on Saty. Mg. last took train to [struck through: Barr] Serampore first class 1.2. took Gharrie & went down to the river to go across to Barrackpore. got gharrie on the other side & called at Dr. Brown's. very kind & asked me to put up for a day or two. Mrs. B an old Scotchwoman pressed me to take everything on the breakfast table. Met Capt. & a Dr. B Brown just come out from England in the service. Col. Mitchell called during the day. saw some fine stereoscopic views Paris ones belonging to Capt. Had some tiffin & went across to Serampore to go on to

Intended going out for a walk this mg. but it was too foggy
Thursday March 19th 1859.
Went out this Mg. at six with Philips went on bd. the "England" was offered to go home as surgeon in her. L Sr. called afterward on Capt. Coupar of the "Ivanhoe" said I should meet him during the day at Patersons. Called on Capt Eales asked advice as to whether I should go in the "England" or "Ivanhoe" thought I was fixed unless could get another Surgeon Called on Dundas at Shand Fairlies. asked terms for England free passage only. Made up my mind to [struck through: call] go on the Ivanhoe Capt. Coupar called in the afternoon at Mr. Ogilbies

me to get bill for full amount Capt. not fond of giving perseved [persevered?] give me one on Condition of giving satisfaction. would not have given me another £30 for Medical Services &c went to the Exchange with Wharton drove home went & had tea bade Wharton good bye expecting he would soon follow to England had tea after got [struck through: a] parcels & letters from Mrs. Millers Sang a song or two with Miss Miller & Miss O An Old Scotsman sang a lot of Scotch songs. bid them all Goodbye. Gave Charley Philips my gun for 3 rupees.

Up before 6 went to China Choke to get some blankets & shoes with C Philip & William Ogilvie tried to get Change of a 100 rupee note

all night on the bench. very light breeze moving along one or two knots Peterson commenced to prick off a Chart of the route to England appears as if we were to make a very long passage I hope under 5 months at any rate. hot day fine light breeze sprung up in the Evg. 4½ Knots. up at 4 this mg. woke by noise on deck occasioned by a squall [overwritten:up] turned in again up before 6 bath tea read Pickwick abroad Close hot muggy day nervous after smoking a Cheroot Peterson turned in feeling feverish

Up at 5.30. a bath & coffee finished Pickwick Abd.
