Dear Edward:

I meant to write before but have not. No apologies to offer although I really have been awaiting the verdict charged against my neck. I suppose mother has told you all about it. I guess I'll have the dog collar on Wednesday. We received several letters from Richard Bates today with

Dear Edward:

I received your letter the other day and was mighty glad to hear from you, but that of having to sign up in the National guard is hell. It makes me boil. It seems that the way they have to rope you in. However the N. G. have improved a great deal so lets hope things will be better later on than

Dear Bogoo (spelling?)! --

Pardon me for not writing before but I have been on the sick list for 3 weeks. I saw your folks at the boathouse Sunday & your father gave me your address. The male population of college is getting smaller. I got a very nice letter from Wendall Hauch a short time ago. He is in northern Italy & seems to enjoy his work very much. Do you know George Meyer from Alameda. He is in the training camp at Linda Vista. He was a in my class at Cal.

You will will interested perhaps in knowing that I have left the great unknown & am [now - crossed out] to be after initiation Thursday a Sigma Nu. War produces great changes. Anything might happen. I am living in Berkeley, California for a while until I get O.K. again. So far I enjoy very much. I hope I get the part of college life that we lost before. That is the only reason I joined, so as to complete my college education.

Dear Bagoo:

I got your letter to-day so I am answering it before I forget. Your letter was very interesting and I was certainly glad to hear from you. I haven't got that book yet but I will this week. Shep's lady was the one you met at the Senior assembly. Shep is now at Fort Sam Houston doing laboratory work under Kofoid. I hope by this time you are a full fleged [fledged] 2nd lieut.

My father has been called and

My dear Edward:

Today is your birthday and we all miss you very much, dear boy. We are going to burn seven candles tonight to celebrate the event.

Many happy returns of the day and may the next such day be spent at home.

I am leaving for Nelson tomorrow morning. I saw Egilbert and
