Dear Edward -

Your letter made me laugh — a great deal — and as the French — would say— Vous êtes très amusant. I have been working like a war horse this week at the Palace — selling catalogues — at the French Art Exhibit. "at the Palace"[crossed out] — The pictures are nearly all war pictures — Did you see them at San Diego —?

My own dear one: Your letter written Sept 9th from a dugout close to the front came this morning - and it certainly wrings our hearts to know that you are [underlined] so near the front:

And we were startled to hear of your finding it to easy to get used to the danger & walking through woods without your helmet and gas mask.!
