Bull Lion comes home tomorrow. No Zoo refund as yet probably at the end of this week.

Charlie Lane is at the Third O.T.S. at Camp Lewis in the Artillery branch. His father told me all about it.

I am sending you a clipping from this morning's Examiner in which your name is given in place of mine. Pretty good, eh! Charles Edward H. Bates; 18: 3rd

College has begun and is sure hard on me. I am on last legs now — & if that collar doesn't aid me I might as well die as I am always in agony. Don't tell father & mother for they will worry. I can sleep well. & after being up 1 1/2 hrs. I am all in — ache, pain, etc. Its slow death, I guess.

Well Shnedie, will right soon With love

if you know better. I only wanted to be sure that you did [underlined] know. Sometimes we get ideas about words when children that are mistakes & we never find out about them – for instance I "always want" [underlined] to say Ludricious ["ri" double underlined] when I mean ludicrous ["ludi" underlined]. There is no such word as the first one I spellt [spelt] but when a child I read it that way & never quite [underlined] got it fixed in my head although I know [underlined] about it perfectly – but always must stop to think.

"Bull Lion" looks fine & got some carved ebony elephants & some interesting Kodac [Kodak] views of India. He did not see Norman Bates – but talked over the phone with him. – Waltman & Hall

My dear Edward:

In one of your letters recently you said you had only $1.75, that you had not been paid for last month, and that you had borrowed $10.00 from Lesley. I am not sending you any money, as I have told you to ask me when you needed it, and you have not done so. You may not have intended it as a hint, I don't think you did, but I feel that you ought to write to me openly for either a gift or a loan. I dont think that I have yet received any thanks for paying for your uniform at Adams & West.

I am not complaining, as I am used in my family to not receiving thanks, but all of you, for your own sakes, should show appreciation of things done for you. Lesley says his watch is on the bum. I have sent him a box today to ship it back to me in, and I have seen Shreve who will overhaul it. How is yours now?

Last Sunday was opening "to"[crossed out] day at the boat house. It was miserably cold and windy, and I dont like to see the crowds of young fellows who ought not to be in civilian clothes. Tommy Allen was there in his Flying Cadet Uniform and looked well in it. Howard Deas telephoned in last night to get the latest dope about you. Bull Lion goes again on the Colusa to India. He brought us a

Dear Edward:

I received your kind letter the other day and have just made time to answer it. I am very glad to see that you are having such a good time, but be careful of yourself.

Yesterday I went to the + & it was full of bees & I only got stung four times. Ow!

There is not much news, but there was a swell fight today, & a man got the biggest & worst black-eye, I ever saw. I bet his jaw was broken, his whole left side of the face was black & yellow. He went & got a revolver to kill the fellow, but we took it away from him & he was mad as the dickens. He was drunk.

I went fishing today & caught one 2-lb black-bass. They didn't bite very well, so I went swimming & had a swell time.

I saw "bull" Lion & Tom Pickersgill & Capt. Mansfield, in Capt's scow. They anchored here overnight so I went on board & had a swell time til 11 P.M. They are going to Sacramento & are on a cruise; they were out three weeks, already, & were going to be out three weeks more.

Helen invited me to go down to their place at Carmel, & stay during July, & I think I will. Nifty, eh?

There is no more to say, so hoping that you are well, happy, & enjoying yourself, I am

your loving brother
