have managed it certainly not so easily without the help she gave me.

I hope you will try to help her and Mr. Waterman all you can.

It has been very hot [underlined] here all day but the snow on the mountains [inserted above the line] helps us to feel cooler You will soon be in the snow too We wish you could have been with us today, but I know you will enjoy the camp as much - i.e. if you are quiet and helpful you will -

I miss you very much dear & would like to have you here this minute. It will not be very long till we are all at home again I hope -

Father tells me Mr. Fisher will pay your stage fare - so that would leave you a larger margin than you were thinking.

I hope you will have no trouble getting off with Mr. Fisher next week -

Try to keep quiet and calm and you will be more likely to get on safely & make fewer mistakes.

I wanted to talk to you a little last night

Office: June 29/09 Tuesday

My dear Edward:

I got your postal card of the 27th yesterday in which you say your purse with $1.25 was stolen out of your coat pocket in camp. What does Mr. Fisher think of it, and does he think it is one of the boys? I enclose you a new purse as requested. Dont leave money or valuables in camp. Always have your money in your pocket when you are out, without a safe place to keep it.

I am sending Mr. Fisher a cheque for the first two weeks as follows:

June 6th Supper to June 20 lunch – $24.00 Stage June 6 1.00 Baggage " .25 Leader box .25 4 Ideal flies .25 $25.75 [total is double-underlined]

I hope you are having fine weather and a fine time.

Your loving Father H L A Bates

you do not accuse anyone of dishonesty in regard to it without being quite certain what you are doing. You should not have left it behind dear you should have taken it along with you or left it with some of the head men. Mr. Fisher for instance. I hope you are enjoying yourself. I feel sure you are from all you have written & hope you are less nervous than you were – & that you are getting the better of the stuttering. I am sure you can.

We have had some lovely drives and rides on horseback & enjoyed them. It is hot today here. More so I think than I used to think it in Montana. The valley looks lovely. Jocelyn is well & so are the rest of us.

I was at Bozeman last week

My dear Edward:

I got your letter of the 1st today and was glad to find you were still having such a good time.

I am sorry to find that there is probably a thief among the boys in your camp and I hope that Mr. Fisher will find him, and send him home.

Lesley's address is Gradon's Camp c/o Western Pacific R.R. Oroville Cal

I have addressed your envelope and sent it on to him.

Norman is well and so am I. Dick seems to like his work and apparently will remain until the end of this month.

Lesley will be home about the 12th I suppose as he says he will quit on the 10th.

Lots of love from your loving Father H L A Bates

says she will leave Billings on the 23rd of July. I think therefor as your school begins again on Aug 2nd that you had better come home to arrive [to arrive underlined] either Sat or Sunday morning the 24th or 25th inst.

Ask Mr. Fisher to arrange for you to leave the Camp to come home so as to arrive here either Sat morning the 24th or Sunday morning the 25th. Be sure to write and tell me which day you will arrive, so that one of us can meet you.

Mother is having a very swell time in Billings but the weather in the day is very hot. 108° in the shade. What do you think of that? [sentence underlined] I hope your shoes and the mosquito netting arrived safely.

Nor & Les are at the boat house, or I am sure they would send their love to you. I do anyway. Les says that Dick's camp is liable to be done away with any day, as the work is nearly finished, and that it would not surprise him to see Dick come home at any time. Goodbye old boy
