Dearest E

I forgot to send you the letter of Dicks yesterday – It is a splendid one, and I am proud of the generous spirit in which he takes his disappointment – It is the right way but not always easy – However she did the right thing herself in writing him in advance – so he evidently does not feel that he has any thing to complain of – & it is very much nicer that it is [double underlined] so – He is a dear old fellow & my heart aches for his loneliness & his disappointment – Fondest love dear

Your loving Mother

[written vertically on left side and top center:] Hope you can return to Les what you borrowed. If you need more call on us. Les may [underlined] need his.

Fond love —

No news since

If you want me to attend to Mrs Walter say so at once & be sure you make it clear what you think you can do because I don't want to get you in wrong by saying yes if you can't come or vice versa.

Your loving mother

Rebecca Helen Bates

If you think you can't go on account of the wedding that is [underlined] excuse enough I imagine – but if it is to take place afterwards that is different.

trying to be with her so much or see so much of her – a little is all right perhaps – but not so much.

Think this over, [and - crossed out] will you & see if there is not some truth in what I say.

Always your loving Mother

R. H. Bates

Your French flame Cl. S. would have been more likely to be permanantly [permanently] congenial than this & you felt it wiser to forego that affair tho you were fond of her too.
