Dear Edward: —

Being a constant reader, and while glancing at the local "Haycutter" last evening, I came across attached article in the Police news. Naturally I was not surprised to see your name in this column. I was however greatly pleased and shocked to read of your being brave and noble.

All joking aside, Ed, I'm proud to know you and want to congratulate you. I would have given a lot to see the presentation. I'll bet some big fat French officer kissed you on both cheeks. I expect he got a thrill from it.

Alameda and Bay Farm Island are just the same. The wild clams are still dashing around the outlets of their favorite sewers. The Police department is just the same, with the exception of a new hat he is wearing.

Be a good boy, Edward the brave, and come home soon.

Kindest regards to General Pershing and your French lady friends.

Yours as ever

Sydney S. Clark

[attached newspaper article:] Alameda Youth is Awarded the Croix de Guerre

Lieutentant C. E. H. Bates of Alameda has been awarded the Croix de Guerre with palms, according to a cablegram received today by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. A. Bates, of 727 Parus street.

The young officer was decorated for bravery at the battle of Marcheville while serving with the 103rd Infantry, principally of New England troops.

He was trained at Camp Kearny and went to France with the 4th Division, but upon reaching that country was transferred. At present he is at Coblenz, Germany, with the 147th Infrantry, 32d Division.

Two brothers are also in the service, Major Norman C. Bates in the Philippines with the marines, and Lieutenant R. W. Bates is with the navy in the Atlantic. Another brother, Lieutenant Leslie R. Bates, has just received his discharge from the aviation corps.

Before enterting the service Lieutenant C. E. H. Bates was a student in the University of California.
