stayed at Bailey's all day went up in their Gharrie to the train. 4 as. & came down to Calcutta between 5 & 6. Steamer at Howrow smashing the Davy's's [?] &ce. [written between lines: Smith came down to Calcutta secure now]

Tuesday March 8 [overwritten:7] 1859

Arranged all my clothes this mg. ship to go next Tuesday 15th. Went out with young Philip to Larry's Bank posted a letter to Mr. Young. Called on Capt Eals & [struck through: went] Mrs. Eales had got some Chicken work. 3 Collars & Sleeves 15/. Went to China Bazaar bear up 3 shops for things to take home told them to send for a look tomorrow mg. playe[d] whist all evg. with Mrs. Philips & the Misses Ogilvie

Friday March 11th. 1859.

Remained in the house all day till after dinner went down on bd. the "Belgravia" which arrived today with 90 Elephants (Philips & I) Capt. had gone ashore saw Wade very happy to see me Ships Joe. W stuck in a Hotel in Calcutta & going Steward in one of the P & O boats. the crew had all left & gone home in a Ship Parsons dead. Vase [?] drowned after getting a bill on house for £32. asked Wade to Call. Came [?] the Strand in a ticka Gharrie with Philips

Saturday March12th. 1859

Remained in all day. Could not get a Gharrie without sending 3 rupees beforehand walked on to Wilson's with Philips about four in the Afternoon got a Ghanie there bought two bushes on the way. [written above:for Philips ] Gharrie wallah went off with then & left us at Kidderpore went on bd. the "Belgravia" Capt. Again on shore. Saw Wade & the rest. Friday May 5th. 1859

Sunny the last week. We have been gatting on our voyage fav- ourably. we have passed Mad- agascar & are now well across the Mozambique Channel. for the last 2 or 3 days we have ran upwards of 200 miles a day. A (Yankee ship "Panther" passed us the day before yesterday (two days in sight) going nearly 1 knot more than us. said she was 35 days from Calcutta we have been 43. bitten by a rat the other night in the hand. got the Carpenter to close up a hole at the head of my bunk. Weather Cool & pleasant. Therm 70° Mother Careys & Albatross & Mollyhawk[Mollymawk]

36° odd South & 17. Something West. Tedious Slow work. 2 months from Sandheads today.

Sunday May 22nd. 1859.

Fine day sharp & Cold. fine breeze sprung up at 12 ocl yesterday & continues today. 170 miles to the northward of the Cape today read Exs. [Exodus] & some of Guthries Sermon

Monday May 23rd. 1859.

Fine Cold Sharp day. 145 Miles today. off Oliphant river. in 32° something & 12 something. read account in the Calcutta review of Dr. Leyden. Got from Payne. expect to be in St. Helena in about 10 days.
