A Souerain Remedy for a sore breast or any other swelling Take a pinte of ye Juce of groundsell & mix ther wth 6 or 7 or 8 spoonfulls of wheat flower ye worse ye flower is ye more you must put in & stir y[m] together then take ye yolks of 2 or 3 eges & beat ym very well & put ym in yn boyle it alltogether till it be a very thick pultice wn you have taken it of ye fire out in 3 spoon fulls of raw hony & stir it together & lay some of it on a cloth as hot to ye breast as ye party can sufer it renew it evening & morning this will either dissolve ye swelling yt it shall not break or if it be broken lay this pultice to it & it will both draw & heale so you aply nothing else this hath been much used & hath done rar cuers wth litle pain

The Yellow Salve of my Lady Husseys 29 Sep: 1684 Take 4 ounces of venis terpentine as much Bee wax, almost as much Rozin a little bitt of fresh butter Boyle all these together in a skillet & as it boils it will rise up to the top of the skillet & then it will fall of it selfe again. then take it off (it is boild enough) thrn power it forth into oyster shells & so keep it or in a [gelly] pott.

A Medecin for a strain to be used at ye first geting it or after Take a napkin & fold it in 4 doubles more or less according to ye greatness of ye strain & dip it in cold watter & lay it to ye strain & then heat a wollen blanket as hot as you can & wrap it in it & so doe for 2 or 3 tymes if ye strain Continue this hath helped ym wn straind 2 or 3 weeks

To make a Salve called flos. [ungueatuim] Take of Rosin, perrosin of each one round of virgins wax Olibanum, frankencense harts or dear suett & venus terpinten mastick & ounces of each one pound, powder yt as will powder, & cut yt wch will not, then melt ye rosin, perrosin, mastick olibcaum & deeres suett together in a pan afterward put in your mastik finly powdred then set them on ye fire & keep ym well stiring yt they seeth not over & so let ym boyle gently, you stiring ym till you thinke ym well mingled together, them strain it as hot as posible you can, thro a strong Canvas bag into a pam of about 2 galonds yt hath in it about 3 pintes quarts of whit wine, ready heated, yn set it again on ye fire & boyle them halfe a quarter of an hower, allwaise stiring ym then take it from ye fire, till ye scume be off, then put to it 2 drames of Campher finly powdred or sliced, & stir ym well a while, then put in your venus turpintin still stiring it, till it be cold, or so stif that it will be stired mo more then you may roule it up you must have ye help of 2 men to stir it yt wn one is weary ye other may work & ye other hold ye pan a slice must be got about half am [rln] long like a puding slice half or a quarter of this quantity you may make at a tyme this must oyle this hands yt work it & ye trencher on wch they work it if any of ye whit wine work out it is good yo keep to wash sores Cap it up in oyle paper

181. An Excelent Pultice for a sore breast Take a black sheepes head with the wooll on it & boyle it in spring watter about a galon & half til it be all to mash the meat from the bone on a gentle fire then take half a pound of rice & boyle to a pultice in the broth then take oyle of cammamile & oyle of Roses of each an ounce & 2 peny worth of saferon & the yolk of an egg beaten among them mix all this together & lay it on the [illegible] place affected luke warm spreading it on a [?] cloth if the breast be broken in several holes then take goat dung sifted & (?) into powder & take a tent of lint & dip it in the powder & to apply it this also with [Desoulu?] a cancor; & it said never to fail to cuer a breast.

Another Pultice to break a sore breast Take 2 handfulls of mercury 2 handfulls of [?] prick them clean & shread them & (mal?) take also a good handfull of chickenweed or 2 handfulls, a good handsome [?] of [?] grease & put them into milk & boyle them very well then thicken it with bread crumbs or wheat bran like a pultice then take it off the fire & put a half an ounce of (fenygrick?) small beaten every time you apply it to the breast make the quantity you lay on as hot as the patient can abide it & mix it with the yolk of an egg & will break the breast then to heal it take (red sag?) & ground (?) of each a handfull shread very smal then take goats grease & beat them very well together untill they become a pretty smoth salve & so work little of it in your hand untill it be warm then apply it to the sore & it will heal it you must shift it night & morning the abovesaid pultice must be laid above the salve to keep the breast warm for a milk sore in the breast

Take 2 ounces of bees wax melt it then put to it 4 ounces of (dear?) sweet or gresh butter with out salt if cannot get the (dear?) sweet 2 spoonfulls of hony 6 spoonfulls of whit wine vinagar let it boyle up between every thing you put in then bake it off & put in 2 grated (nutmegs?) 2 spoonfulls of (?) peper stir it till it is cold Let the woman keep her breast clean (drawn?) from the milk lay the pultice all over the breast only cuting a hole in the cloth for the (?) pultice it at the first once a day if the breast is not brock but if so take if off every night & wipe it & lay it on again warm & if this is a humor it will disperse it, or if it breaks it will help it to break & heat it again

An approved Salve to heal & draw any Impostum futilow or sweling in any part of ye body Take smal red docks & pull off ye leaves & take ye midle stripes as I say ye leaves stript off & take ye same striges or stringes & wrap a handfull or 2 of stripes in ye leaves & lay ym in ye Embers wrap a handfull or 2 of stripes in ye leaves to put ye striges in to be rosted very tenderly if you want leaves to put ye striges in thus to rost in ye fire then take paper & to let ym rost in ye Embers a 1/4 of an hower untill they be very tender well rosted, then take ym off & put some hogs grease amonge ye stripes & so wth your knife bruse it & mingle them together & it will be as a salve wth wch take some of it & spread it upon some dock leaves or els take a cloth & spread it on yt & lay it to ye place as hot as they can sufer it & this doe 2 tymes on a day for this will both heal & draw all swelings or Impostums or fistilows this a french man used to a woman who had a wonderfull sore eye yt she could take no rest who aplyed this upon her eye, in this manner first her eye was closed & a litle leafe of ye dock laid along ye eye lid & this medicine was laid then upon ye eye very hot, & this did fetch out both ye pain & draw out ye Corruption & heaf it, & it will doe ye like upon any sore, & this is a most soverain medicine

To kill an Itching in wounds wn healing or scabs Take a pottle of smiths watter a good handfull of red sage & as much Alum as 2 hens eges & 2 penith of hony & boyle all this together in an Earthen pot & let it boyle well 1/4 an hower & take it off ye fire & keep it wth ye hearbs for your use, & warme a like of it in a poringer blood warme & wash ye place morning & night & this will kill any Itching in ye flesh or scabs or in any part of ye body

A very drawing Poultice to make a hard swellinge breake Take of white lilly roots and boyle them in milke till they be as soft as butter and mix wth them some brawns grease & some barly meale or course wheat flower and apply itt to the place afected morning and Evening that which you take of in ye morning may serve the next day mostened wth milke & brawns grease like as at first

Take of white lilly and boyle thiss in milke [tellstho]

To make a pultice for a sore breast Take a handfull of scabious of chickweed or smalidge of red sage, & a good handfull of oatmell beaten as much sheepes suett as 2 egges shread all this together very small & boyle all thes in 3 or 4 pints of milk till it comes to a pultice it must boyle very well & so put it on a brown paper & to lay it to ye breast as hot as can be indured

Another pultice good to break sore breasts or boyle Take ye grounds of ye strongest ayle you can get & boyle oatmell in it & some red rose leaves in it to ye thicknesse of a pultice & put in it some bears greas or oyle & to apply it warme as they can bear it morning & night
