The original compiler, Anne Brumwich, writes in an early 17th cent. hand, but some of the additions are much later, one dated 1681 is found on p. 12.

A good Poultice for any swelling Take malows red rose leaves whit lilly root red sage shred thes & boyle ym in milke & whit bread & put some fresh grease to it & renew it twice a day

A good Poultice yt cuers sore breast or hard swelling making ym to breake & cuere wth out salves Take a pint of milk or wt quantity you like a quarter of a pint of fine oatmeale a quarter of a pound of good fine bores grease half a spoonfull of Linseed oyle a quarter of a pound of hony 2 handfulls of cammamile shred small boyle all thes together well & then put in your cammile & then boyle it wth it alls your grease after yt & last of all your linseed oyle let ye grease & oyle boyl a littl together & lay this pultice on as warme as they can well bear it, & drese ye sore only once a day if ye sore be broke you need put on no salve to it for this pultice will ever it laying it on thiner & thiner

To make a watter yt cuers wounds & sores wth out plaisters Take in May 3 quarts of new milke whey & let it be milk measure boyle it till it come to little more yn a quart & put to it a good handfull of oaken leaves & more be half ashen leaves ye first puting out yt lookes red a handfull of young Elmer leaves & topes of Briar leaves boyle all thes well together & some water creasses, boyle ym wth a quarter of a pound of Alum, & wn all is well boyled wring out ye liquour from ye hearbs & let it settell & so put it up for your use & wn you use it wash ye sore well wth it once in 24 howers this watter will keep 2 years

A pultice to break hard swellings Take of cheekweed a litle, & silegreen yt growes upon walls, & whit lilly leaves & boyle ym in milk & then put white bread to it haveing shread your herbs small & put in a litle bors grease & to apply it twice a day till it be broke laid on a warm as they can bear it & if you se it doe not break in 4 or 5 dayes put in some whit lilly root to it

A very Soverian Oyntment for any Ach or payne Swelling or bruise or sore breast & likewise to make a Salve for of it for any Sore To make ye Oyntment Take parsley, Sage Smalidge, Arpin, Cumfry, Southernwood marygold leaves, Housleek, Valerin, wormwood Selfheal, Biteny, mercury Scabuous Herbgrase platine Ribb, herbe Benit Lyonstooth Backshorn, Take of every one of these 4, of the phisike herbwomens handfulls, & pick ye dry stalks from them, wash them very well set them a dreyning two dayes, & when they have stood ye full tyme, then swing them in a Cloth very well, then Chop them very Small & take 4 pound of fresh Butter out of ye Churne in May and put ye Butter & herbs together in a bottel, or Skelit, you must not let your fire be to hott, but keep them Stiring on the fire, & when they have boyled a good while, take them of ye fore, & take a Streyner, & two Earthen pannes, & streyn it into one, & as you Streyn it put it into ye other, & when you have done let it be could, & then take of ye topp & put it into an Earthen vesill, and Clarife it on ye fire & take what quantity you please for Salve, & keep ye rest for oyntmt, that which you make for Salve take Bees wax, Rosin & venus turpinten a like quantity of these 3 {ye was somewt more yn ye rest} being alltogether they must be as much as halfe ye Oyntmt, or better, which you make for Salve wch melt alltogether & Sumber a littel on ye fire & pour it into a galley pot, & it will keep 2 or 3 yeares, it should not touch any pewter or Brase, but ye beytell that boyled it, for it puterifyes it, this Salve is very good for old sores, or green sores, for paynes, aches or swellings the petient that is anoynted wth it must not anoynt themselves, but some other to anoynt them when they use it they must anoynt against ye fire, and lay a warme Cloth to ye place greived {approved by Mary Langham}

A Receipt of Alderman Langhams wife of a seve cloth allmost for any thinge as aches swellings spreains soares, Bruses, cuts, To draw and heale if not an hot humour Take 1/2 a pinte of salet oyle, 1/4 lb of red Lead sersed finly through a sive mix the oyle & lead well together, then set it on ye fire, allwaise stiring of it wth a flat stick while it is in being boyling & when it is allmost boyled enough ye lead will turne blackish And to know when it is enough try it thus by diping a peice of Cloth in it, wch wth your finger feel, if it stick not greasy when it is a littel cold if it doe not Cleave to ye finger of Bees wax, being cut ready in peices before wch put in as soon as ever you take ye oyle & lead of ye fire, stiring it till it be melted then dip your cloth in the aforesaid composition haveing a stick ready oyled to hang it to cook, while you dipe ye rest the hotter you dip ye [finne] Coalesed

your cere cloth with be, & if you have much to [dyie] as the stufe [cortes] in diping you may heate it againe, but not let it boyle, so soon as you can handle ye CereCloth, before it be neare Cold it must be stretched out between 2 by ye fire yt all places may be alike

For Jackings in the Body Isues a good plaster Take Beeswax 6 ounces Venus turpentine 3 ounces Cinaber beaten of fine powder & mixt with a llittle Salladoyle half an ounce of Minium 3 ounces & half Orras finely beaten half an ounce of musk 2 grains mixt with a little rosewater Let all these be melted together till they be incorporated & be sure it do not boile then dip yor cloth in it (any thin linen Cloth fit for that purpose then oyle it with Sallad oyle & smooth it with a slikston on a plain board

To cuer ye Itch First take brimston & milke 3 or 4 mornings together to draw it out then take about half a pound of unsalted butter or wash ye salt out of it very well & put to it a good quantity of flower of Brimston & powder of allum & ginger & some sope & make it into a salve & put some powder of peper into it & put to it to take away ye smell some powder of nutmege or a nutmeg grated & 2 or 3 spoonfulls of brandy & anoint your self well all over wth it befor a good fire for 3 weekes every night & anoint Espectily ye Joynts wher you find it most & wear one shift all ye tyme let it be a bad one yt you use & wear thread stockings becase they may be washed, & let your lining you wore before be well scalded & blecht for they are apt to Infect again, you may if you will warm your bed wn you goe to it this hath cured thos yt have had it 12 mounths, & take after it some purging phisick to Clear ye blood, & at a mounths End take clean sheets & air ye blankets well befor a fire & if winter hang ym allso out in ye frost & warm ye feather bed very well wth [Colles]

Another Take roach allum & steep a good quantity in as much watter as will wet your shift & wn it is steeped a night or more then dip your shift & let ye watter dry in wth out much wrig wringing out & wn it is throughly dry weare it a week or more & yn doe another so & weare it so doeing till you find ye itching gone let it be an old shife for it will stain

Another Take ye watter yt smiths quench their irons in & wet your self all over morning & night befor a fire so doe till you are well

Do Lowers dyet drinke to clear ye blood for ye Leporsie & Itching distempers Take a pound of dock root & as much dandelion 3 handfulls of harts toung 3 handfulls of Elder flowers half a pound of Antemony crud broke into peices ye dock roots must be dryed & sliced & ye dandelion dryed then put thes into 4 galonds of small ale & drinke no other drinke put ym in wn it is working & as soon as it is clear drinke it if you please put in ground rue 4 handfulls

For ye Itch Brimston & sweet butter & mary gold flowers & tyme boyle all together & make an oyntment & strain it & anoynt ye party therwith

To make a watter to kill a [fefer] To a quart of Runing water let it boyle to a pint take 2 ounces of Rock allum half an ounce of whit coperas & beat ym both to powder severally, & boyle them half an hower or better in ye watter

To make a Cooling oyntmt Take marygold leaves housleek alehoof & plantin leaves boyle them in fresh butter & strain them

To cuer ye Itch Take ye roots of red dock roots scraped & sliced & boyle a good quantity of ym in cream & so anoint ye party wth it wher it troubles ym or all over & allso let it be done morning & night & wear ye shift a week & allso [tun] up bear wth this dock root & drink of it 3 weekes let ym be suer wn they begin this way of cuering ymselves they lye wth none yt have it or yt any yt have it wash thir clothes wth them or for ym to wash ym or yt they wash any ones clothes who have it also it will be good to wear other clothes yn then wt they had for clothes yt are wearing constantly doe carry ye Infection in ym or let ym be well washt allso if they cannot have new lining to put on let thir shifts be very well washed & boylved & bleatched for want of observing thes rules makes many not find a cuer if any person yt is troubled wth this disease doe live near ye bath or can well goe it is one of ye best remedies can be used for it for ye avoynding this disease it were good to wash every ones clothes apast, for in great familyes some or other may [chaned] to have it if they must lye wth any one being children let ym allse use ye oyntmt wth them & drink ye drink it purifies ye blod let ym at ye first take half a pint of ye drink & if they find it worke above 3 or 4 tymes a day let ym next day take a lesse quantity as they find thir streignth will bear but let ym use it 3 weeks or therabouts let ym keep warm while they are anointed & be suer to anoynt them selves warm befor a fire & if yt bear be not tow purging they may drinke no other drink for 3 weeks some use [Elecompany] as thos dock root

To cuer a [tetter] Take some of ye [Tapers licqurs] out of thir pits & wash it wth it morning & night this hath cuered titers & some say ye shingells

A Receipt of an Exelent Ballsom good for all sores inward or outward of Sr Richard Knapers {The La: Husseys} Take a new Earthen pipkin that is well glased wch containeth 3 gallons & put there to 2 quarts of Springe watter 2 quarts of Sallet oyle one oz of St Jhonswort Dragons bloud an oz mumca one oz sake half a pint liquid Storax 1/2 an lb of Venus turpuntin half a lb; cochinall one oz, then take another pipkin and put therein of yealow bees wax one ib sweet Mariesome Bay Leaves and time one handfull Rosmary Aspes one handfull let them two pipkins stand over an indiffrent hott fire of Charcole for the space of half an hower then powre this Bees wax & hearbs into the other pipkin and Let itt stand so a little while, then put in of red Sanders beaten to powder one oz and stire itt well till you thinke itt be Coulred and see itt boyle; then take itt ofe the fire and power itt into a broad Earthen milkepan then put into itt one oz of naturall balsome and straine it hard through a Strainer into another Milke pan; so let it stand till it be cold which you may know by a Cake that will rise on the top of it the Longer it stands if it be till the next morning; the thicker will the cake be then cut it and melt the cake in a pewter dish and power it into pots for you use the best time to make it is the midle of June as allso save the Liquid water under the cake to wash sores befor you aplye the Ballsome for the […] Vertue of this Balsom see the 2[…] 23 page of this Booke

To make oyl of Swallows Take Seventen Swallows from the nest & cut them into peices feathers & guts, take Cammomile Rue, plantine, Ribwort bay leaves, pony Royall, dill, hysop Rosmary Sage, St Johns wort 1 handfull shred them & boyle them in a pinte of Sack, & 4 of Salet oyle untill ye herbs be Crispt & the wine wasted, then strein the oyl to keep it

This is good in all aches palseis Convoulsions which proceed from Cold causes paine in the sid Coughs wind in the Belly mothers Chafe some of it into ye parts afected & cover them wth a brown paper covered wth wooll.

Against a bruse Take Salendine soden very soft in running watter, make therof a plaister and apply it to ye sore.

To make oyl of Swalows good for ye hearing Take young swallows strip of thir feathers, & cut ym in little pecies & put ym in a pot or Juge yt will goe into a pan wher in is hot cold watter stope ye pot they are in very close, & then let ye watter boyle fast till you thinke they are boyled so as to have ye licqur run from ym then keep it for your use & drop some of it into your ear warm goeing into bed & lye on ye contrary side yt it may not goe out, this hath cured thos yt were very deafe Allso for deafness drop in yr ear some of ye Juce of ground [Juey] & stop ye ear wth some of ye leaves 2 or 3 nights together or longer

A Receit given under hand and Seale by a Southerne Phisition to the Sherriff of York as a Speciall gratification for Some favours done to him by the Sherriff Take 4 handfulls of Sage beat it in a Stone morter like greene Sauce then putt in a quart of clarrett wine lett it soe stand 3 or 4 daies sterring it twice or thrice then lett it stand and settle and the next morning take of the Sage wine 3 spoonfulls and of runing water one Spoonfull, fast after it an hower or better, Use this from [michas] tell the end of March It will cure any ach or humor in the joynts, Dry Rhumes keepe from all deseases to the 4th degree, It will helpe the Dead palsey and convulsions of the Sinews It Sharpens the memory and from the beginning of taking of it it will keep the body milde strengthen nature till the fullness of ye daies be finished noe thing wilbee changed in ye strength Except the change of yor haire It will keepe the teete Sound that they be not corrupted It will keepe you from the gout and dead palsey the Dropsey or any Swelling in the Joynts in the body It will alsoe helpe women in conseption if they use it 20 daies together, this by the helpe of Almight God hath kept me in this Estate from 50 to 85 yeares old Gods name be Glorifyed

for one yt hath ye Scuvy in his mouth Take sage young Isip & Rue of Each a like quantity dry it & make this tow fin powder mingle in it a litle Alum & so much hony as will mak it into a masse & so wth this rub your teeth every night after you have washed ym & your mouth wth this following watter wch you must doe allso morning & after noon Boyll the same hearbs of each a handfull in a quart of running watter & put a spoonfull or tow of hony wth a litle Alum & ther wth wash your mouth
