The Deputy of Native Affairs has referred to me your communication of the 13th August inquiring as to the aboriginal meaning of the word "Weranga".
According to the natives here the word means "Bad Man".
I have also ascertained, in case you are interested, that another aboriginal word for "Bad Man" is "Goonkee".
I trust this information will prove helpful to you.

The Superintendent, Cherbourg Settlement, via MURGON.
The Editor of the Toowoomba Chronicle of Post Office Box 40, Toowoomba, wrote to this Office on the 13th instant as follows:-
" I was wondering whether you might be able to give the "Chronicle" some assistance, in ascertaining the meaning of the (apparently) aboriginal name, Weranga. (Hand written - "BAD MAN")
The local Railway Office has sent the query to us. They point out that there is a small railway station, Weranga, on the Tara line and another place, Peranga, on the Cooyar line, and similarity of the names leads sometimes to confusion, particularly in the consignment of parcels.
The suggestion has been made that the name of Weranga (the smaller place) be changed; but it was hoped that a name with the same aboriginal meaning might be adopted. The University was unable to help us in the matter, but we thought that perhaps your Department might be able to.
Trusting that we are not occasioning you too much inconvenience, and with apologies for troubling you in the matter."
It would be appreciated if you would endeavour to ascertain the information requested and reply direct to the Editor with copy to this Office.

Re Aboriginal word for Rainbow - your Ref. 1A/230
In Western Queensland dialect the aboriginal word for "rainbow" is "Moondagarra".
