8 Thursday First part crew bagging on East side done about 9 tons. Worked up to dinner time. After dinner crew stop on board [illegible text] stay squally 11.20 pm. Got under weight. Fresh SSW squally. Shifted to the south end North End of the Island. [Illegible text] 45 fathoms chain rolling heavily. 9 Friday 9 am hove up anchor. Went on the south end of the bay on the east side & loaded boatloads guano. Sea rather lumpy. Took cargo boat up on the island & set sail at 5 pm towards Port Adelaide. Light SSE sea smooth. Bar 30-45. Very fine. 10 Saturday First part light north & variables. Stop Wedge Island 1 ½ hour. Got letters & dug [illegible text] meat. 2 pm Left Wedge towards Port Adelaide. Light NNE Bar 30-55 & cloudy. 9 pm passed Althorpes. Light North Bar 30-50. 11 Sunday 9 am Passed Cape York. Light north & variables. 4 pm tacked towards Port Moorowie. Cloudy variables. Bar 30-58. 9 pm passed Troubridge Hill. Light variables 3 am.

12 Monday 3 am near Marion Reef. Light showers. Swell calm all day & cloudy. 4 pm light SE to Glenelg. 13 Tuesday Midnight passed Glenelg Semaphore. Light SE. At 2 am 4 miles bearing East. Defiance towed ketch to Port. Stop Mount Lyle Wharf 9 am. 1.30 pm started discharging. Discharged 27 Tons up to 5 pm. Glen assisted at discharge. 14 Wednesday 8 am started discharging. All discharged at 4.15 pm. Paid crew up to date. Fred Johnston 22-2-4 by cheque. Paddy [illegible text] 22 -2-3. All discharge 73-11-3. Js to town. Cheque 125-2-0 Adelaide Steamship Com cheque for tucker 14-14-0.

26 Monday Paid warfage 5/9 harbour dues. At Darling Wharf. 3 pm crew started work. Engaged two hands at 10 pounds per month 4 pm Defiance towed ketch to sea 5.50 pm Passed out [illegible text]. Marsden [illegible text] 19/6. 7///a Len 1/3 Crew 1 tobacco each match 13 shillings. 1 dozen soap 1/3. [Illegible text] 1/6. Cash 2 shillings each 1 bottle wine 2 light [illegible text] 27 Tuesday 8 am Stop Marion Bay for shelter. Fresh north. Bar falling fast 30-15 at 6 pm. Raining nearly all day. Crew making fenders & sundry. One sailor sick Charley. Raining all night. 28 Wednesday Noon Got under weight. First part raining. Fresh west & variables. Made sail towards the Islands. Wind came in south and went SW. Made very little head way. Made several tacks near little Althorpes. Bar 30-10.

29 Thursday 6 am tacked neat Western River. Fresh NW. Fetch Cape York. Brought up at Stenhouse Bay. Squally. Got fire wood. Crew variously employed. Bar 30-00. 30 Friday 7 am got under weight. Made several tacks. Wind south to west. Anchored again at 2 pm. Wind NW and shifting. Bar 29-90. Hard squalls near the jetty. Crew went & got fire wood. Ketch leaking took 24 minutes to pump out 12 hours water. Got bread 8 [illegible text]. 31 Saturday Fresh N to west bar 29-85 at 6 pm. Bar 29-90. Hard squally at times. Kopoola left 1 pm for Adelaide. Took 8 minutes to pump at 2 pm six 6 hours water. 1 September Sunday At Stenhouse Bay wind bound. Got 1 dozen bread, 5/ [illegible text]. Gale WNW. All hands on shore [illegible text]. Js & Leonard went out to [illegible text] about 5 miles.

2 Monday At Stenhouse Bay wind bound. Fresh west & squally. Heavy swell. Bar 29.95. Crew variously employed. Let go second anchor. 3 Tuesday First part squally. Moderate SW to south. Bar started to rise 30-30 at 4 pm. 2 pm hove up second anchor & got under weight towards the Guano Islands. Set the jib & took it in & stowed same. Heavy head sea. Made several tacks. Had tea 5.15 pm in ketch. Made lot of water 3 hands on pump. Move ketch near Cape Spencer. Making water ½ full rounded jetty & ground ketch & drop anchor took all ship store & crew close on jetty shore hands assisting same. Finish 9 pm sea moderate. Wind south. Bar 30-30. 4 Wednesday 8.30 am all hands dismantling ketch & stacking gui on shore & unbent sails & sundry jobs. Got all booms on shore & some parts of engings. Paid crew up to date 3-6-8. 3-6-8 each. H. Ericksson S. Wells left by schooner for Port Adelaide. Fresh south to SSE. Hoisted dingy up on steps.

5 Thursday Maldon Lewis wrecked at Stenhouse Bay. Took chain & anchors & engings on shore. Worked up to noon. [Illegible text] to high sea. Smooth light SE. Bar 30-50. 6 Friday Working at wreck. Took pump & sundry gui on shore. Painting same. Fresh ESE to NE & NW. Painting winch & enging. Sent telegram to South British Insurance Comp. Paid 2/6 7 Saturday Trying to get out pump & painting same. Fishing Cutter Zephyr called & got some fish. Picking up some Gui. 8 Sunday Fresh north bar falling. Ketch Maldon Lewis listed out to starboard to much swell. Breaking up front deck & bilges & port side. Got one ham & [illegible text]. Return to jetty. 4 pm bar at 30-30.

9 Monday Working at wreck. Took anchor & chain with the assistance steam [illegible text] to jetty & three shore hands assisting. Fine clear & calm. Ketch breaking up. Fast cut away both rigging & picked up sundry Gui & bag potatoes. 10 Tuesday Maldon Lewis mast fell today at 2 pm. Painting Gui & stowed sails away. Light NE swell. At wreck. No work done. [Illegible text] Broken on both sides. Glen cooking. Bar 30-40. 11 Wednesday Painting engings & sundry jobs. Towed main mast to jetty. Ketch all broke up & mizzen came down during the night. Light ESE to WSW. Bar 30-35. [equations]
