Mrs Stanford: Dear Madam:

For the sorrow that comes to a heart bereft of life's dearest treasure, there is no consolation only as the soul seeks rest under the shadow of His Wings. The sympathy of friends comes as a balm. Time touches the bruised spirit and it still lives, but lingers frequently in the corridors of the past. Hours of great sorrow come to all and humanity can

although I have to work hard for my living, a crisis having swept away my fathers fortune, the wealth I might have had could never have taken the place of the legacy I now possess viz that people remember them for their kindness & good deeds. and should I ever be fortunate in business and able to help others I would rather leave this world knowing I had made others happy & secured their love then [sic] own the earth.

Kindly pardon a stranger for addressing you at this sad time but my dear madam the kindness and good done by your husband is the finest monument he could possibly raise in this world & in closing I can only say I regret there are not more who follow in his foot steps.

Yours respectfully M.M. Thomson
