Murray Hill Hotel Park Avenue 40th & 41st Sts. New York July 3rd. 1893. Dear Mrs. Stanford When the sad news of your dear husband's going came to me, my heart went out to you in renewed sympathy in this new and great sorrow. It seemed only a little while ago when I wrote from Paris concerning the departure of your dear sister. Blow upon blow has come to your heart and home and you have felt the separation and [ ?]

our blessed Lord who loves us and feels for us more deeply than all others can - when I saw you in the American Church 21 rue de Berri last year, and knew you went quietly in the little chapel where the mummy of your dear boy is reverently associated, I little thought that this summer you would come to the double bereavement which has fallen upon you - We are not sure that our earthly friends will remain with us, or that we can tell the changes which time brings on, but we

after loneliness - Senator Stanford had lived to plan and carry forward a great work which will link his name with that of your dear son in the blessings which will flow from the University and in the gratitude of thousands of young people who in the coming years will avail themselves of its benefits - His life will not only go on in that land beyond this world, but in its benign influence it will go on in this world - "His works will follow him."

You have the sympathy of very many friends whom you have never seen but who rejoice in all that your husband and you have been doing and for you many prayers have been offered that the best and sweetest of all consolation and help may be yours - that of

He is made to live here for good through youOnly a little while and then the call comes for every one of us - Surely Christ has more for us in Heaven after life's toils, trials and experiences are over. Mrs. Thurber unites in love and sincere sympathy. If in the good providence of God you should come again to Paris we will be most happy to see you. We pray that the dear Lord may abundantly comfort youVery sincerely yours Edward G. Thurber

[continued on Murray Hill Hotel stationery] can be very sure of Christ. We have just returned from the west to New York. We have been taking a vacation of a few weeks from our work and visiting our son here and friends in the west. We expect to sail for Paris on Saturday July 8th on La Bourgogne - We feel sad to bid our dear ones goodbye but we feel that there is nothing better than work for Christ -

The church makes some progress and we see some good results among the people and the large number of young people whom we want to reach and help in the best life for them. I know that our faithful sexton John Hawen thinks of you and will sorrow with you when he learns of your sorrow. He often speaks of you and we never go into the little Monterey Chapel without being reminded

of you. Since I reached New York in May, I have learned of the death of Dr. McCall - I bade him good bye before we sailed. He was feeble then; the poor weak body could not do all that his soul longed to accomplish. He gave his life for the good of his fellow men. I knew him intimately and honored his spirit and consecration. On the table of his home lay a volume of the memorial of your son. How many lives are touched by one! Your son is what Senator
