My dear Mrs Stanford,

Knowing you to be a woman of benevolent character, I take the liberty of asking you to befriend one that is in need of your help very much. Pardon "this liberty" but I will ever try to be worthy & will prove myself to you some day. In giving to the poor, you are lending to the "Lord" & His intrest [sic] is always sure. NEW YORK, Dec. 15, 1901

Mrs. Senator Leland Stamford [sic] San Francisco, Cal.

Dear Madam:

I have been offered the opportunity by a reliable paper pattern company, the chance of becoming the sole agent for their product in all Spanish speaking countries. But with the condition that I must do all advertising, catalogue printing, etc. at my own expense. As I am not possessed of the required amount of capital say about $500 to properly place these patterns in such countries, I am unable to accept said offer.
