[preprinted] OFFICE OF VINA RANCH

H.W. McINTYRE, GENERAL MANAGER

Vina, Cal., [/preprinted] August 6 1893 [preprinted: 189]

Mrs. Jane L. Stanford,

Present

Dear Madam:-

I have the honor to hand you the following statement concerning the amount due and payable to men employed on Vina Ranch during the month of July.

There were employed, as per our payrolls, 302 men, and the amount due is found to be $10790.56.

Of the number of men thus employed, 50 are at this date marked for discharge immediately upon receipt of funds necessary to pay them off to date. I should have stated that a portion of this number of men are employed with our threshing outfit, and their work will not end until Tuesday of this week, 8th., inst.

Other men will be discharged as soon as work on Palo Alto horses shall have been completed or diminished.

Whether any additions to our pay roll will be necessary during the month, it is impossible at this time to say, as it will depend upon the ripening of the grapes and preparations for wine making found absolutely necessary in consequence thereof.

In conclusion, I beg to assure you that no effort will be spared

Vina, California., August 22 1893

Mrs. Jane L. Stanford,

Menlo Park, Calif.

Dear Madam:-

I have your letter of August 19th., which came by mail this morning.

Replying to the inquiry made, would say that I mailed the report asked for in your letter of August 8th., (a copy of which was shown me by yourself in the city on August 10th) on the 15th., inst., addressed to Charles G. Lathrop at your city office. The letter was so sent in consequence of my understanding that all communications of business character were to be addressed to him for you.

The working of interviewing each one of the several men employed upon the ranch involved considerable time and trouble, but I am surprised that you have not received the communication, as certainly sufficient time has elapsed after it was mailed at this place, provided there was no miscarriage or delay out of the ordinary.

I have been quite anxiously waiting reply to that communication, as some of the men are impatiently waiting to know what offer will be made for new rate of wages, which, under instructions so far given, I have no authority to fix.

Yours Respectfully,

H. W. McIntyre

Vina Calif August 15 1893

Mr. Charles G. Lathrop,

San Francisco, Calif.

Dear Sir:-

I am this moment in consultation with our Mr. Copeland (he having come in for the purpose) to whom was given Mrs. Stanfords order relative to closing the boarding house on the house on the bank of Deer Creek, known to us as "Ranch House No. 3".

Mr. Copeland states that he fully realizes the importance of the work which has been committed to his care by Mrs. Stanford, in that he is by her made responsible for the conduct of the farming department of Vina Ranch. It is in view of this responsibility that he has decided that it is not advisable to close the boarding house mentioned.

Among the many reasons which have been considered by him, and which have led to this decision, he desires me to mention the following:-

First. That as soon as the men now preparing the Palo Alto horses for market have finished their work, one man will be able to do all the work required at Ranch house No. 3, thus reducing the wages to a minimum. That the class of men now located at No. 3, as regards their work, hours when, and conditions under which, it must be performed, are quite different from those at the winery house - so different, in fact, that to place all in one "mess" will surely cause many of the best men, and most difficult to replace, to leave
