January 1898.

Thurs. 27th. Clear, cooler.

Father took Aunt Eliza to Fair Hill, to go to Washn. with Cousin Sarah for the day. After dinner I went to Bkve. with Dolly, to spend the aft. and night. Cousin Charlie K. brought Aunt Eliza and the mail up in the evening.

Fri. 28. Clear & cold.

The following Aunt Eliza has kindly kept for me. Brother Charlie, Sister Annie and Mary left at 6.30 for Charles Town W. Va. going by Washn. Cousin Jim called. also Mrs. & Miss Yearly in the afternoon. Bro. C. came home at 8.

harles Town. W. Va.

Father, Mother, Sister and I left Olney at 7.15 for Kensington, the road bad. Went into town in the same car with Susie Barnsley and Marion Jones. Mother & sister took our baggage to the B. & O. station. via the F. St cars. Father & I went to Cottage Market for a few minutes. Then met Mother and Sister on F. St. went to Meyer's, Boston House, Lansburgh's, Bon Marche, where I purchased my hat. Baum's, 5 & 10th Ctr. strr. Lake; Lindsey's lunched at Budd's, where Father left us. Mother went to Rich's for shoes. Sister and I to the Boston House. Time was getting short, so Mother and I took a car for the depot: in plenty of time for the 3.48 Express for Charles Town. Saw Senator Willington at the depot. A beautiful ride.

January 1898

on the cars. passed Washn. Junction and changed at Harper's Ferry. reached Charles Town at 5. where cousin Sam met us, and took us up to their comfortable house. Cousin Dellie seemed glad to see us, and had a fine supper. Cousin Sam went out, and we retired early.

Sat. 29. Clear, snowed.

Brother Charlie went to Olney on several errands, and to get the mail in the morning. the men ploughing.

Charlestown

Late breakfast. Cousin Ruth Brown called. after Harry Howell. After dinner Mother and I napped. Hannah and Mamie Howell called and Cousin Fannie and Maude. The latter and I walked out to see Florence, for Cousin Dellie. my first view of the city. Mother and I called at Mr. John Hall's. Harry came to tea. Miss Keerl, a Mr. McElroy, Mr. & Mrs. Dane Howell called after tea.

Sun. 30. Cold. Cloudy.

Brother C. and I went to Meeting. Edward Farquhar spoke very prettily to a large gathering. Called at Hermon and home to dinner. No one here. and we had a pleasant quiet afternoon & evening.

Charles Town

Miss Clara Houff called and took me in to the Presbyterian church right next door. Very pleasant to hear the familiar service, and a good sermon by Dr. Hopkins - music good, particularlly Mr. Fulton's voice. saw Mr. & Mrs. Kyde, a young bride and groom. Mother and Cousin Dellie did not go out and when Cousin Sam returned from his church, he Mother and I walked up to the Episcopal grave yard and in to the church. Then through the Cemetery, when we found Carrie Jones Raum's grave out past the depot, and up the hill to the new part of the town - went up on the porch of the big Hotel Powhatan, and some distance beyond that to look at the glove and other factories, and buildings: Cousin Famie and Maude called in the morn. for me to go to Church with them. Had a late dinner and no supper. Mr John Howell and Harry came right after dinner and a little later Mr. John Hall - much talk and monopoly. Harry and I took a nice walk out to the Toll gate, via Hunter's Hill. met Maude and Annie Macon - such a grand view of the Mountains, the gap at Harper's Ferry. saw the snow storm over the mountain tops. When we returned Cousin Dellie sent us with a message round to Cousin Ruth & Fannie Brown's, where we heard a lecture on Nicotine! Cousin Sam, Mother & I heard Dr. Smithson at the Methodist church in the eve.

Janurary 1898

Mon. 31st. Snowed.

A snowy day. snow 3 inches deep. Ed went to Gaithersburg for coal. We contented our selves in doors. Brother C. deep in "Quo Vadis," which is the rage. he reads and reads, day and night, "its an ill wind that blows no body good". The novel keeps him in doors, and I have company at the same time!

Charles Town.

Mother and I served, Harry, Cousin Fannie, and Maude called - also Elizabeth Hall, who invited us there to tea, but we had another engagement. Mr. W. H. T. Lewis, an old friend of Father's, whom I have heard of all my life, came to dinner - I was interested in hearing him talk of the old Alexandria school days. Cousin Fannie called a few minutes in the afternoon - also Miss Florence Hunter, and Miss Ruth Brown. In the evening Cousin Sam, Mother and I went to the Ro[?] Memorial Hall (Fire men's) to hear Dr. Price on Psychology. lecture very good, but the experiments rather a failure, except the mind-reading which was very wonderful. Home late. Young Mrs. Jim Macon called a minute.

February 1898

Tues. 1st Very cold and windy

Snow drifting badly all day. Farmer's convention postponed on account of the extreme cold. Bro. C. went to Sandy Spring to pay some insurance, and to Cousin Joe Stabler's to dinner, where he had a very good time. brought letter from sister Annie and Mary - they are having a pleasant time. I have been working over the flowers and helping keep up the fires - the pipes a little frozen but soon thawed out. we run the fires up to full blast to midnight. I brought some flowers into the sitting room and burned a lamp and stove in the conservatory. nothing froze, though the thermometer is down to 8 (degrees) here and zero in some places.

Charles Town.

Very cold, windy and blustering. Mother and I went to Mr. Brown's to get my watch hand fixed. She left me and I was to meet her at the P. O. but in my haste I went to the wrong "Office," one of the 13!! we called just a minute at Cousin Fannie's, then walked up to the depot. a bitter time. saw Hannah Howell. Miss Letty Carey Ambler called. we talked of books and many things. Mother and Cousin Dellie went out. After dinner we served till about 4. when we started out in the wind - had a [?] time. went to Palm[illegible]. I bought my shirt waist - to the China Store, and to Mr. Dave Howell's to
