Monday May 16

Cloudy & cold -- At home most of day, finishing my 1896 journal job -- Got it completed, with the last word of December and the year at 7:30 PM having taken me a full week of steady work to do up the year in good shape -- This shows how much time it takes to write a year of this Journal -- Would take over a year at this rate to copy the whole of it from the beginning, March 18, 1849. Evening down town awhile -- Fresh war news very meagre -- Sampson and Schleys fleets don't find the big war fleet of

Bill", otherwise William C Gates, the richest and most noted of Klondike millionaires was drowned on the 9th instant by going through the ice in Lake Bennett, on his way back to Klondike -- Two women and a man were also drowned with him -- One of the women was Nellie Lamore, his sister in law, the other's name not given -- The other man was J S M Wolfe of Salt Lake, Bill's partner -- It is supposed that as they all went in together, a strong current carried them away under the ice -- (see page 81) -- Edouard Remenyi, the famous violinist died very suddenly of heart disease in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon very appropriately before a large audience at the Orpheum -- on the stage with his violin in his hand -- He was in the act of responding to a very enthusastic encore, when he suddenly weakened and fell forward upon the stage at the footlights -- He was taken away and doctors summoned at once, but the great master of the violin was dead -- He was a Hundarian by birth, aged 64 years -- Been in this country many years -- Was quite wealthy (see page 64) --

Wednesday May 18

Cloudy -- variable -- Twelve volunteers from Wadsworth, went up on morning train and all were accepted as members of the new Cavalry company -- this making 56 out of the 84 required -- Col W H H Pike came in with them, from Wadsworth this morning, as recruiting officer at that place & went on to Carson with them, he returning on evening train -- I met him. He says a telegram received from Capt Cox of the other Cavalry Co which left last Saturday, & are now at their destination, Cheyenne, says the regiment with them will leave there for San Francisco within a week -- The armored cruiser Charleston left Mare Island this AM for Manila -- no troops -- full cargo of war supplies, ammunition, etc for Dewey -- This the first -- The Oregon is all right & with Sampson's fleet -- Schley's squadron has arrived at Key West & will join Sampson directly when both are expected to tackle the Spanish fleet from Cape Verde, which is said to be off, Venezuela and Columbia -- The new battleship Alabama was launched today from Cramp's yard, Philadelphia -- Will be several months before she can be completed & ready for war service --

jumped the track and two locomotives, four baggage mail & express cars were ditched about two miles above Verdi -- a dozen miles from here -- in a bad place, in a cut, Engineer hurt and two or three Piutes riding on Platform of baggage car were killed -- All trains blockaded both ways for the day -- About 2 PM a big special from the East pulled into Reno and had to stay till the wreck is cleared. It was a train of ten pullmans and two box commissary cars -- They brought a battalion of four companies of 84 each or 340 in all, including officers, belonging to third Regiment Nebraska Volunteers, N.G. -- The rest of the regiment -- 1,000 men in all -- passed through in two other trains between then & four o'clock this morning -- all bound for the Presidio, near San F -- They claim to be principally farmer boys, and they certainly are a fine looking lot of men, choice specimens of manhood, all robust, well behaved young fellows -- They wore the uniform of the regular service & were fully armed & equipped as

a special liking to the soldier boys -- They expect to go to Manila -- Several more trains loaded with troops from Colorado, Utah, etc are close behind and will pass through here after the wreck is cleared -- tomorrow morning -- or perhaps sooner -- One car in this train named "Pioneer" was said by the soldiers occupying it to be the oldest and first Pullman car ever built and the car in which the remains of Abraham Lincoln were taken home from Washington after he was assassinated -- I as well as many others took a look through it -- War news meager & unsatisfactory -- The Charleston had to return to Mare Island berfore she got out of SF bay,

by reason of her condensers being found to be out of order -- Will detain her two or three days -- bad start -- Sir William Gladstone, the famous Ex-Premier of England died today -- Death been expected for some time -- Evening the Reno brass band serenaded the soldier boys and some guns were fired -- Fourteen more recruits, principally from Elko, arrived at Carson yesterday and were joined to the new cavalry company, making 68 men in all -- Only 16 more required --
