PVT. Henry A. Eckhardt

This collection consists mostly of letters written by Private Henry A. Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen while he was stationed in France. There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, and some to Marie or Henry from others. Henry A. Eckhardt (1890-1962) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1917, and served with the 162nd Infantry in France as a machine gunner, later he was transferred to the 18th Infantry. Once discharged, Eckhardt and Marie married and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where he worked as a fireman.

Redwood City and getting married. That is the first news I heard of the weddings in your letter and I sure was surprised. I guess it must be getting into fashion from all indications. I am glad to hear that Walter is well and able to be around again. I suppose Pete would like to get married but I don't think his mother would want him to do any thing like that. I see by some of the S.F. papers that there have been quite a few weddings.

self on a post card and some pictures I took with my camera. So let me know if you receive them. The weather has not been very bright here so I have not had a chance to take any more pictures. We have had some rain here and the weather is colder. Mother says in her letter that there has not been any rain in S.F. and the farmers are praying for rain.

Well darling I have seen nearly all the sights in this vicinity so all I can do now is go to Y.M.C.A. and write some letters. I read what ever books I can get to read and all magazines. Some times I play a game of cards or checkers, that is the way I spend my leisure time. Some times I lay on my cot and dream of you and home and that is when I feel most

lonesome. We get lots of drilling and exercise and wish you could see the bunch sometimes. They sure are a merry bunch of fellows.

Elsie wrote in her letter that Lena went motor cycle riding and caught poison oak. She was in bed for a couple of weeks. Well darling I have no more news to tell you but dear sweetheart my thoughts are always of you in this far off land. Don't forget to think of me some times when you are out enjoying your self. I often lay and dream of the days gone by and hope that I may return to enjoy some more of those happy hours with you. I never will forget some of those happy days we had to-

Some where in France March 14, 18.

Dear Sweet heart.

Just a line to let you know I am well and feeling fine. I received your letter of Feb. 11 but have not heard from you since. I often wonder how often you wrote to me. I write to you every week and some times twice a week but some of the may get strayed or lost. I sent you some pictures and a post card photo of myself so let me know if you got them. Dear I am sending you another post card in this letter so let me know if you receive it.
