PVT. Henry A. Eckhardt

This collection consists mostly of letters written by Private Henry A. Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen while he was stationed in France. There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, and some to Marie or Henry from others. Henry A. Eckhardt (1890-1962) was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1917, and served with the 162nd Infantry in France as a machine gunner, later he was transferred to the 18th Infantry. Once discharged, Eckhardt and Marie married and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where he worked as a fireman.

San Francisco June 29, 15

Dear Friend Marie,

I received your letter and am glad to hear that you are well and enjoying your self. I wish I could get a week off and come down to go in bathing. Jim said some thing about going to Santa Cruz over the Fourth but is not sure if he will go. We are going to Napa on the 16th of July and only wish you were going. We planing a trip for the end of July or the first of August and I hope you will be able to make that trip. I rang up your aunt the other night and your aunt and uncle are coming across the bay Sunday.

at the house this week and we have lots of noise. I went to a dance with them last Tuesday night. Everything is fine up here and I get home early at nights. (no more jitneys). This is all I can think of to write at present so I will close with love and kisses from one who thinks of you.

Los Gatos.

April 10, 1916.

My Dearest Friend Henry:

Arrived at Los Gatos about 3.30 o'clock and was a little tired. Before coming to Los Gatos we stopped at Saratoga near the creek and ate our lunch. That night we went down down and looked around. knees. Took a lot of pictures. The oldest girl took a picture of me sitting out in the middle of the creek on a log with my feet hanging in the water. Gee I bet it will be a fierce picture. Monday we hiked in a different direction took more pictures. We started quite early and came home about 1:30 then we went out in the machine way past Saratoga, and then up to the "Odd Fellow's Home."
