Some of the letters were written by Mary Sanderson Grases (sometimes spelled Grasses), his daughter and the first black public school teacher in Oakland, California.

New Bedford. Sept 12th/39

Dear Sister

I now take this opportunity to write you few lines hoping by the time that this reaches you, it may fine [find] you and the Children well and hope that you arrived there safe every time the wind blows Grandmother begains [begins] to worry she gets all the pictures out and sets down and looks at them often she is well as usal [usual] I have made up my mind to stay at home you know how much furniture you left in the house I shall have to get a carpet and one half dozen chairs we have a cooking stove but it wont [won't] burn coal so I am going to change it - Bob got it at Auction, Mr. Taylor tried to get a carpet for me at Auction but they had none Saturday one ton of coal will last us a long time John has gone to Boston and Odel is here yet and is going to Boston to live this week to keep house I made George three little dresses and a new cape he is fat as ever all the time calling "Kate" I have not been to work this week but I am going next week we have no Cook yet Sarah Roper has not paid me any money yet do you owe Mr. Gardner 75 cts. [cents] I am going to pay him George sends a kiss for Katy and all the rest

Adelnie says I must let her write some in this letter but you know how much she can write we heard of the death of Mr. Quein it is a dreadful thing to his little girl if it is true. Mrs. Cambell sends her love to you also Mr. Taylor and he sent you these papers I thought as Mr. Looney and McGee was coming I would send your shawls and a night-gown and Book you left here

Bor is well and is going to give me one months wages so he says to get carpet but I dont [don't] believe him. Margaret has been quite sick so as to have the doctor but is better George Mitchell likes that dagguerotype [daguerreotype] but it is rather dark Bill Virginia Sarah Mr. Mrs. Green Mrs. Dunlop Margaret Mrs. Castlie Susan Oliver Mrs. Only Lizzie Waters Emily Mrs. Bright Mr. Gadner Mr. Witmot Anthony Mr. Jourdain Napoleon Stockton all sends ther [their] love to you Anelen George Mr. Mitchell, and more but its [it's] to [too] numerous to mention You must kiss the Children for us Charley he is still fixing An's banjo give our love to Jeremiah also his mother sends her love to you all here is Charley and the banjo send me some money soon as you can

I know that Mr. Sanderson was very much pleased to see you all. I guess that you was sick enough

the Sunday after you we went from here old Mother Wiggins went to Meeting took Communion, and was very happy and as she was coming home she stop in Mrs. Atkins and coming out fell down and had a fit paraliltic [paralytic] fit and Doctor Jennings was called and could not do any thing [anything] for her and she died Monday three Oclock [O'clock] and was buried Tuesday afternoon for the Second Baptist Church Mr. Wilson had a very nice funeral we have got our table we gave her and Mr. Wilson gave Granny the Black silk dress and black cape and bedstead Charlotte Lyons the chairs and feather bed and most all the things

Edward Cook is dead Mr. Cook son on Chancery Street Petter Nelson sister Aunt Amy in the yard. A Mrs. Nelson I dont [don't] know wheather [whether] you know her or not and old mother Newton on Smith street [Street] all in one week

Mother Wiggins was buried on our lot at the foot on the other side of Thomas you must write every steamer
