Manuscript collection consisting of letters, documents, a journal, photographs, and other ephemera pertaining to Jeremiah Burke Sanderson and his family. Some of the letters were written by Mary Sanderson Grases (sometimes spelled Grasses), his daughter and the first black public school teacher in Oakland, California.

Seem to See you day and night. So much that very often while on my knees in my emagnation [imagination]. you would be Standing before me. in your Late illness before I heard that you were Sick I got very much troubled and wanted to See you was tempted Several times to write. and finally I received a Letter from Some one [someone] Stating that you was sick then I Saw in the elivator [elevator] a and watch it closely for your recovery. but one night during your illness I Saw you in my dream in a Strange place Standing all alone dressed in White Singing god moves in a Mysterous [Mysterious] way I thought then you had crossed over. but the Lord did not See fit to tate [take] you then but in his wise and grasious [gracious] Providence has again restored you th health for which I feel greatful [grateful] to my heavenly father. I ask an intrust [entrust] in your prayers and in the prayers your profess'd children that the Lord may ever Stand by me. thou he has call me to walk in very rough ways here amoung [among] Strangers and amoung [among] heathens as it were. yet he has watch'd [watched] over me by night as well as by day and has Suffered no evil to befale [befall] me. Oh that men would prease [praise] the Lord for his goodness and his wonderful works to the Children of men. Like as a father Titeth So doeth Titeth them that fear him. he has truly been my husband my father and my friend. not more then [than] others I deserve yet he has given me more. he came here with me and he is with me now bless his holy name. my health is pratty [pretty] good. Please give me Love to bro - ried and bro - ham = Sister F Robinson Campell Tappingham = and Sis Jones

brother Sanderson will you oblige me by seeing Joe and talk to him for me try and get him to come to me if you please do use all you enfluance [influence] an [and] see if you cant get him to come here. I Stand in need of a friend and proct protecter I Live all a Lone my house is not over neer [near] to any other there is no one with me but a Little girl I am trying raise about 6 years of age [inserted] I may take Sick and die in the night without any one with me and Strangers would get what I have tell him I have a good home for him if he will come to it bro-San = I have written that boy with tears in my eyes beging [begging] him to come to me from time to time yet he will not come he Say that he is in a distressing condiaton [condition]. now tell him for me that I have no mony [money] to Send him but the bill he wants me to Settle in San -- I Shall Settle it by the help of my master. and if he will come pleae [please] tell him to write me right away and I will Send hin him the mony [money] to come with if I have to borrow it but if he will not come tell that I never. never. no never want him to write me another Line as Long as he Live for I am tired bothering with him if he dont [don't] a come I never want him to own him me as a sister and I will never own him as a broI am greaved [grieved] from my heart a bout Joe, it Seem Like him and that Coleman are determined to put an end to me no more

The disciples on the Sea. Jesus in the mount. Night. The ship tossed, waves & wind. -
