P.C. Mozoomdar Sept 30th 1893

30 - 1 Sonnet - Across the desert in the heat of a man Alone at morn, upon a camel rode, Where nimble feet along the hot sand strode, And made the pace a camel only can, Over burning quagmire where the fierce noontide ran Like motion one; and flamming ember glowed On the rare green that painted by the road Beneath the rarer palm is scarce living fain. - " And "Oh for water," groaned the man, and oh!" The carmel's hoofs seemed echoing in "pain". And, "Oh for shelter from the dust, and heat For rest some wide-spread tree on place Below! Great Allah, hear thy traveller complain. And grant us soon sweet water. safe retreat:" - " Sonnet I know not if Great Allah heard the prayer, And drew the man, and camel, to the shade Of still dark cedars, who an island made Of purple shadow on the boulders there, Where tenderly the gentle river bare On its clear breast, for the sandy glade A slumber - song - a sleep - turned serenade Wherein the weary lost all morse-full care. - " Nor care I, dear one, whether you, or I That camel are, of if the man are we: Nor get if life moves through shade, or sun. But this I write 'ere ink and muse grow dry. Your house has been that cedar-grove to me Through which sweet love, and strength like stream brave sun!
