World War I Collection

my diery [diary] I slipped up and forgot to enter one of the most important functions of our stay in N.Y. Namely the dinner that Mr. & Mrs. Witman gave us. It was a wonderful dinner and absolutely up to style, with butlers, footmen, and all the rest of them. Had entertainment after dinner. I think we had the dinner on Wednesday night. ______________________________________________________

Saturday, May 19, '17

Arose at 8:00 A.M. after having less than four hours sleep. Had pictures of the units taken on the roof garden of the hotel. Went to the dock and had baggage inspected. Helped buy Herb Brown's cigarrette case, Dick's new pocket book.

and fasinating. Of all the dangers Elliot had the clossest shave of us all.

Sunday, June 24, '17.

Got up at 10 A.M. Fooled around camp until 2 P.M. Had a lecture and demonstration on the care of our cars by Captain Erhard. Herb Brown arrived from Paris. Everybody delighted to see him. Transfered from in charge of No 9 to second driver with Ben Burton on No 6 by my request. Mighty glad to get with Ben and get away from Wheeler.

Monday June 25

Worked all day with Ben on his car for inspection. Officer said the car was very good.

all along the Chemin Dames. One shell passed over our heads and burst at the side of the road near the bridge above Ouilly. A few shells & shrapnel came in while were were at Souper. Came home over a new road as the Ouilly bridge was blown out. Had a bad time going over a swamp in a dark woods. No 6 acted up pretty badly. Got home at 3:30 A.M.

Friday, July 20, 1917.

Stayed in camp. On the dish washing squad. Herb Kendall went to the aviation field and went up. Herb Brown flew over camp. Nine men were notified that they would leave on their permission at eleven tomorrow morning Much excitment

in Paris and taken my exam. He was very nice to me. When I got back to camp I found that they had sent for me again, but met the messenger on my way down & found that it was about that registered letter again, so I felt much relieved. Saw Herb Brown & he had a fit. He wanted to know why I hadn't told him & I told him why in no light terms. Herb jumped on Krusi, because he knew that I was going & didn't report it. Krusi thought that I was trying to lay the blame on him, & I went to Herb & made him square it with Krusi. It now looks as if everything is going to blow over. The only chance of getting caught now is the French officers
