note the night before wanting to know if I were in camp or not. Herb. Brown signed it & sent it back. It came back to Herb and wanted a yes or no answer weather I had been in camp that day or not. Herb. called Dick, Herb. Kendall & Krusi into his remark and tried to find out if I had gone to Paris & they would not give him a yes or no answer. Herb finally sent the note back saying that after investigating he found that I had not been in the camp. He was afraid to do otherwise for fear that if he said I was here they would send for me. The boys were afraid that I had been caught & that the military authorities had notified our French officers.

coffee. The coffee was hot and that is all you could say for it.

There were twenty one posts on the guard that were enough for a camp twice the size. A couple of months later it was cut to three posts. While I was confined to camp I couldn't bare to see all the good moonlight nights go to waist, so Herb. Kendall, or Charlie Grant, and I usedto run the guard and go for walks in the evening in the country. We got away with it allright, but nearly got caught several times.

could get warm, or get anything to eat. As soon as it got daylight Herb. Kendall and I found a place where we could wash. We were cold and stiff so we roughedhoused to get warm and then washed by a hydrent, and shaved. About six thirty we managed to get hold of some bum coffee. After going back to the train Frost and I wandered down to the end to watch them hitch the engine on. Jack Stores and Stewart were already down there. We amused ourselves for some time by

Still stormy. Had an inspection by the inspector general in the rain this afternoon. I am mighty anxious to get out of here. We are being “ridden” as if we were Boche prisoners, or even worse. I can now see why some officers only go over the top once, and never come back.

Didn't get up until 10:30. The train left at 12:14 so didn't see much of the town. Got home at 6 P.M. dead tired physically, but mentaly much rested.

Tuesday Sept 3, 18.

Went on my cross country trips this morning. Enjoyed them emensly. Had no trouble. I was the only one of five fellows to go this morning that didn't break something in landing. I first went to Romarantin and back, then to Pontlevoy and back. Both trips took about two hours. I didn't fly this afternoon as my stomach is on the bum. I started to feel sick to my stomach [deleted]when[deleted] while I was coming back from Pontlevoy. I flew over
