the adventure as we felt amply repaid by either seeing the cathedral or Reims, and seeing that we saw them both and also got to the front line trench within a hundred ft. of the Germans, and got a chance to stick our heads up for a moment and take a peak at their lines and a village about four hundred yards away. We were happy and said that we were ready for peace any time, as we had seen enough.

Friday August 31, '17.

Stayed in camp all day, and slept most of the time. Completly all in. Dick got his apointment as 1st Lute in artilery.

Celles coming home and the hill was so steep coming through the village that I was only able to keep my car from running away. Couldn't have stopped. Was running in high and on compression, had my hand brake back as far as it would go and the foot break [brake] was no use. If the hill had gotten any steeper I would have had to run into a wall. I had never been over the road before, so believe me I was worried and was mighty glad when I came out on the main road and knew where I was. Got an order to go to the Y.M.C.A. tent. Captain Mullett addressed us on the fine work the boys are doing. He said that now and only now that the blood of our comerads [comrades] had been spilled that we can relize [realize] the seriousness of our work. He complemented all the boys who were under fire Sunday night for their calm behavior.

Went on convoi from Bazoches to Celles. Drove alone. Cleared up a little during the day, but is raining again tonight.

to us. An American captain talked for inlistment at the Y.M.C.A. tent. Tonight is clear and cold. Mat. has tried to make a galolene stove out of a 75 shell. It gives a little heat. Herb invited us to his remarc to have a little chocolate and toast. Johnson Strison, and Tedford came up and brought the materials. Ted had to get up at 4 A.M. this morning and run up and down the road to get warm. He was not the only one that was cold. And gee but it is cold here now.

planes directing the fire of the guns. You could see the obules go way higher than the planes. Went up on top of the hill where I could see the German lines. There was one puff of smoke right after another all along the lines from the bursting shells from our guns. I am certainly glad that it is us that is making the offensive and not the Germans. I don't see how any living thing can escape under such a fire. Tried very hard to swipe a stove at Celles. There was a bunch of them piled up in a shed, but a soldier was making a vase and stayed
